day 44: everything is breaking!!!

friedrich (bike) is broken again. have i mentioned that? yes. it should just be a small adjustment but i adjusted it for an hour last night and couldn't get it to work. basically, my easy gears are out of commission, which means i can definitely ride around the neighborhood, but biking to work is basically out of the question. about a quarter of my ride home is giant hills that are impossible with easy gears, let alone the highest five. and i was going to take my bike in yesterday, but called the guy and he explained how to make the adjustment (which i think i'd figured out before) but it's not working and the top of the screw is all worn off and i don't think it would fix the problem anyway....and i'm so frustrated! i just want to ride my bike around like i was before.

okay. rant over. for now.

----(update)
taking my bike in after work before rowing. we're competing today against the other learn to row team! whoo! and then i join the novice team and practice before work and on saturdays.

also, my new heart rate monitor should be here tomorrow, although the foot pod that comes with it (measures speed/distance etc.) won't be here until after the fourth. my heart is broken but it's fine.

ice cream cake at work for my coworker's last day. it was delicious but way too much. i should've asked for a smaller piece....i forget that i can't actually eat a decent amount of ice cream without feeling sick to my stomach. that's gonna be awesome during rowing.

**update**
i will write all about rowing tomorrow. it was awesome. but then i got home and was starving and calculated my calories wrong and forgot the cider and juice box i had tonight and now i'm over by too many calories. plus i ate my dinner so quickly that i feel all sick and disgusting and too full. but it's fine because i'm biking to work tomorrow. yay.

food
french toast: 330c, 12p, 1.5f
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ice cream cake: 370c, 7p, 1f
crispin: 170c, 0p, 0f
juicebox ("medal" for graduating from rowing): 100c, 0p, 0f
teriyaki chicken and noodles (whole): 850c, 25p, 6f

= 2355c, 57.5p, 10f
AHHH!!!! and not even good protein/fiber intake.

exercise
rowing, racing(!) two hours-ish, some of it not rowing? so i'm estimating 400c? i'm assuming that's slightly low but i have no idea, let's be honest.

net: 1955c. well, guess i'm really gonna have to work it tomorrow.

sleep (last night)
6 hours

grateful
my bike will be fixed soon. and i'm excited to ride again!
sleep is gonna feel so great. i'm starting to learn just how little i get...scary.
i'm not going to get a lot of sleep tonight, turns out. but my bike is fixed!!

day 43: a change in plans

(part a: work is SO STRESSFUL lately! meaning i have to take more, shorter breaks during the day to keep my brain screwed on straight. thank god for exercise.)

i've decided to change a few things: goals for my blog, my calorie intake, my weekly plan and maybe my blog structure.

here are the things:

goals
when i started this blog, i wanted to do a lot. i wanted to record my calories and exercise, blog regularly, but also try new things, be outside a lot and be more mindful. and i am trying new things and i am being more mindful, but i'm going to release myself of the responsibility to try to blog about those daily, because let's face it, it's not going to happen. and those things are happening organically out of my other goals, anyway. how many hours upon hours have i spent outside already this summer? (as evidenced by my rockin' tan...yeah i need to get on that higher spf thing.) i've decided, then, to focus on food and exercise logs, reflections and getting enough sleep! maybe for awhile i'll log how much sleep i get, too. that seems like motivation..

calorie intake
i'm going to increase it again. it seems i lost weight when i was eating more, so we're going to try 1,700 calories for a few weeks and see how it goes. if my body responds well, i'll keep it up. if i don't lose any additional weight, i'll drop back down to 1,500.

weekly plan
i need to focus on running, but i also want to take advantage of the beautiful weather and row/bike as often as i can. my rule is that i'm not going to do all three in a day ever (at least not when i'm biking to work), since the last time i did that i 100% died. so my goal is to row 2+ times a week, bike to work 2+ times a week, and run 4+ days a week. i think that's usually going to mean rowing on monday and wednesday (saturday as a back-up) and biking to work on tuesday and thursday. my rest day will be friday which is great since i hate working out on fridays anyway.

no matter what happens, i am going to follow my running plan. that means not biking to work when i feel like i'm going to be exhausted, that means running also comes before rowing. my training plan for the half marathon (which i'm going to start training for after the 10k) asks me to run 4-5 times a week, so i'll adjust based on what it says. but that's 500% manageable.

blog structure
i'm going to make a real effort to write a little more, to record the things i'm thinking about food/exercise as i go through this process. hopefully it'll make my blog more fun to read! (although i know you're all on the edge of your seats as it is.)

please comment!! my mom just did :)

**update**
this afternoon i spent about ten minutes on the phone with the bike shop and the guy taught me how to repair my bike with an easy fix. or, rather, adjust. so i spent an hour on it tonight, pedaling around and trying everything and i still can't fix it. so i'm going to have to take it in. maybe tomorrow during lunch? i'm frustrated and i miss biking so much that after i realized i couldn't fix it, i still rode around for another ten-ish minutes because it was so nice to be back on my schwinnbaby.

food
everything bagel (free at work again! meaning i don't have to buy extra breakfast stuff this week. yay. also, i think bagels are actually decent for breakfast when you're exercising a lot. i mean, i definitely should supplement with some produce, but whatever): 300c, 10p, 2f
1 tbsp cream cheese: 50c, 1p, 0f
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ants on a log: 145c, 4p, 3f
teriyaki chicken and noodles (half): 425c, 12.5p, 3f
1c tomato juice: 50c, 2p, 2f
1c grape juice: 160c, 0p, 0f
1c chocolate milk:  180c, 8p, 0f
1 piece strawberry cake: 363c, 4.5p, 0.5f

=2208c, 57.5p, 14f

still low on fiber. i'm going to have to really work on that when i grocery shop for next week.

exercise
interval workout with 4 4-min intervals. somewhere around 420c.

net: 1788c. pretty close to my new goal. let's see what happens.

sleep (last night)
7.25 hours

grateful
for a new direction.
for how handy i'm going to feel when i get this bike fixed! (with the help of the shop guy...)

day 42: reel it back in

i feel like i've fallen off the wagon a little. and i'm going to attempt to climb back on it. i didn't count calories very closely this weekend (although i'm 90% sure that i stayed well within my limits), and ate too much yesterday. meanwhile, exercise feels a little erratic. i'm annoyed that my heart rate monitor is once again broken and annoyed that my bike is again giving me problems. somehow, i have to go get it fixed before i ride into work on thursday...and i'm only riding into work twice this week (yet again), which makes me feel like a failure. aghhhh. i'm trying to really focus on that sleep thing. hoping it will help me climb back on.

---later
so, i almost skipped my run. and then i was like, you know what? it's half an hour. this is easy. i can do this. and i went and it was wonderful. so grateful for feeling fit again.

food
egg bagel: 310c, 11p, 4f
1 tbsp cream cheese: 50c, 1p, 0f
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ants on a log: 145c, 4p, 3f
1 piece strawberry cake: 363c, 4.5p, 0.5f
 shakshuka without a pita: 285c, 11.5p, 1.5f
1c chocolate milk:  180c, 8p, 0f
1 piece strawberry cake: 363c, 4.5p, 0.5f

=2231c, 58p, 11f

proof that i need to eat more fruits and vegetables: LOOK AT HOW LITTLE FIBER THAT IS. ongoing goal. the problem is that vegetables don't give you a lot of calories quickly. which is usually a good thing but is lately a bad thing.

exercise
about 3.6 miles in 32 min (@6.8mph) = 420c
for rowing, i sat in the launch for half of practice, so i'm going to estimate, based on the 2k sprint we did beforehand and the forty-five minutes-ish of rowing that i did...this is a low estimate = 250c

burned: 670c

net: 1561c

grateful
for a refocused vision..and super excited for rowing tonight! (and to get my bike fixed tomorrow.)
that i wore spandex today at rowing and didn't even worry about my thighs jiggling. victory.

day 41: why do i do this to myself?

i got about five hours of sleep last night, minus the hour that i was awake in the middle of the night and could not fall back asleep. what is that about? probably eating and exercising too late. and yes, i stayed up too late making risotto for this week's lunches. because i took a really long nap yesterday and didn't go grocery shopping at a responsible time. i am cruel to my body.

update-----
i'm feeling a little bit like a failure because i've decided not to bike to work tomorrow. i'm going to bed, i'm going to sleep a full night and i'm going to get my bike fixed before i attempt to take it over the hills in st. paul. i think these are legit reasons and i'm rowing and running tomorrow but i'm still not feeling great about it...

food
french toast: 330c, 12p, 1.5f
1 tbsp frosting (i kept testing it for the cake i finished this morning): 50c
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ants on a log (6 pieces celery, 2 tbsp raisins, 1 tbsp pb): 145c, 4p, 3f
too many crackers: 280c, 0p, 0f
1/2 lb peel and eat shrimp with cocktail sauce (yum): 330c, 36.5p, 4f
gorgonzola bread: 350c, 6p, 0f
mojito: 200c, 0p, 0f

totals: 2220c, 72p, 10f

yeah, turns out i ate too much. i guess that's okay every once in awhile, but i feel kind of weird about it since i didn't closely count calories this weekend. also: way too many carbs.

exercise
scheduled day off.

grateful
JASON'S HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for a week-ish. thank. the. lord.
the weather was beautiful and we got to sit on the roof of stella's. perfection.

day 40: holy. jeez.

you guys, i ate like crap today. i mean, not in that i ate too many calories or too much fat...just that i had a kind of junk food-y day. and although i'm going to end up with the same calorie net that i'd like (i mean, i'm estimating), i still feel less than phenomenal.

that's both the frustrating part and the awesome part.

i ran my run today at 7.4mph. sure, i didn't make the whole four miles (quite), but it wasn't because i was tired. it was because i was mean to my tummy and didn't hydrate well enough. but i definitely had at least another mile in me, if not two or three (minus the painful stomach/side cramps from my body being pissed about that whole salt/carbs-only thing). holy. crap. i'm so excited!!! that's like, almost 8 min miles. asdflaksjdf;lkasdfa;lsfdkja;sdkfj!!!!!!!!!!!!

exercise
about 3.7 miles at 7.4mph = 440 calories.

BAM.

...yeah i'm totally not going back and trying to figure out how many calories i consumed today. which i'm fine with. it's been a pretty decent weekend.

day 39: this has to be a fluke

i weighed myself this morning, after staying out late drinking/eating, which usually pushes my weight up. but i woke up this morning and weighed myself and i lost another 1.4 pounds!!! i weighed myself again about half an hour later and it was the same...but i'm convinced that this can't be an actual number. i've also apparently lost about an inch off my waist? which probably just means my ab muscles are finally kicking in...i hope this actually is a real thing and not just a weird scale day or something...

because if i lost that, that puts my weight loss total at about 4.6 lbs, or, more realistically (since i didn't actually give myself a definitive weight to start from), 2.6 lbs. which, that's not awesome for 39 days (5.5 weeks), but it's also not the worst thing that's ever happened.

in other news my heart rate monitor is not working! argh!! more on that later...time for bootcamp and rowing.

food
2c chocolate milk: 360c, 16p, 0f
bean burrito: 410c, 14p, 5f
french toast: 330c, 12p, 1.5f

totals:  1100c, 42p, 6.5f

exercise
rowing/boot camp. my hrm, as i mentioned, is not working...and boot camp was hard today, soo let's call it 500c.

update: i decided not to go back and analyze what i ate for the rest of the day. i was estimating in my head and think i hit about a net of 1500c....i'll go back to calorie counting this week, but am too lazy to do so now. but omg. read the next post.

day 38: these jeans are sorta big

yesterday, i took a break. yes, i went to rowing, but i skipped my bike ride to/from work and skipped my (15-minute easy) run. i was exhausted. and i feel like it's okay that i missed a significant amount of my plan for yesterday, because sometimes i just need a break. and boot camp (pre-rowing) involved sprints, so that's running, right?

in other news, the jeans i'm wearing are sort of loose. whether they're stretched out or i'm getting thinner is debatable, but my tape measure isn't saying much and tape measures don't lie. (unless you're retaining water, are dehydrated etc etc etc.)

but i'm still not losing weight, people. i look slightly better, and i feel a lot better and those are both great things. but i still wish i could just look like i work out as much as i do, like i'm in as good of shape as i am...i'm hoping to go see my doctor sometime next week (i'm due for a check-in after we found out my vitamin d was still severely low, even with an insane amount of supplements) and i'm going to bring him my food/exercise log so he can tell me what i'm doing wrong. (sleep is probably a part of it.)

also, i 100% killed two of my cuticles rowing yesterday. we're not good at balancing the (very thin, long) boat yet, and i was sitting in the bow seat, which means (i think) that i was especially affected. i kept pushing the oar down as far as it would go to get it out of the water, but it wouldn't work, and the boat would rock and my hand would be smashed against the gunnel (rim of the boat) and my hand was a little bloody by the end of it. i'm excited to row stern on saturday and to suck less at rowing...for some reason egluck and i both felt pretty awful about how we rowed yesterday while everyone else seemed mostly pleased..?

one of my favorite people in our class has a brother-in-law who's a cop. she was saying yesterday that when she told him she was going to row in the river, he told her a bunch of horror stories about people jumping off the tall bridges into the water in an attempt to commit suicide. apparently, in one spot, they get sucked down into the muck that comprises the bottom half of the river and suffocate/drown that way. in another spot, you float over a dam and hit a wood chopper. one poor man jumped and went over the dam and lived, with only a broken arm. she said that in the spring, when the water thaws, bodies turn up. i thought of the seinfeld episode where kramer is swimming in the river and he says, "there are a bunch of guys out there!" not realizing that they're dead bodies.

how picturesque.

also, if you need tips on how to be a more interesting person, read this. too funny. (i'm 100% doing the potato thing...because i didn't start it before i read this article...cough.)

another update. i'm exhausted still. exhausted. i'm so unmotivated to run this afternoon that the thought of it is killing me a little. should i still go? if so, please leave me some words of motivation. thanks. <3

food (my net calorie intake needs to be 2,155 today...i still haven't made up my deficit)
1c chocolate milk: 180c, 8p, 0f
greek yogurt: 140c, 14p, 0f
pork and peaches: 235c, 26p, 1f
couscous: 175c, 6p, 2f
1/2c strawberries: 25c, 0.5p, 1.5f
bean dip: 89c, 4p, 3f
chips: 140c, 2p, 2f
17 reese's pieces (yes, i counted): 68c, 1.5p
french toast: 332c, 12p, 1.5f
cheese and crackers: 360c, 16p, 2f
two drinks: 420c, 0p, 0f
4 jalapeno poppers: 400c, 10p, 2f

totals:  2564c, 100p, 15f

well, i reached my net! and then some...not worried about it

day 37: hitting a wall

i was way too exhausted this morning to wake up, and decided not to bike to work. i felt like a little bit of a failure, but i haven't been doing a good job of sleeping and taking care of my other life needs. so that has to change.

i got coffee this morning with a lovely coworker, which was much needed, after staying up late with emlar debriefing the last four years of life. i could barely get out of bed this morning and have been only slightly awake since i got to work.

my net intake today should be 2,120 to even out the last two days. must. happen.

food
1c chocolate milk: 180c, 8p, 0f
1 mint mocha with soy: 373c, 10p, 5f

bean dip: 89c, 4p, 3f
chips: 140c, 2p, 2f
shakshuka with a pita: 455c, 17.5p, 6.5f
meringue: 211c, 3p, 2.5f

totals: 1885c, 59p, 25.5f

exercise
my hrm was having a hard time yesterday and decided to shut itself off. after saying that my resting heart rate was 30 bpm. which, i'm in shape but not that in shape. so, let's just estimate 1 hr @ 123 bpm = 420c

net: 1465c. ugh!

grateful
for going out to coffee for my first meeting today
for how gorgeous the river is, even with its filth and even in a strong current

day 36: catching up

so, i didn't eat enough yesterday. by about 1,300 calories. equals my net intake should be 2,800 calories today.  i am overwhelmed. luckily, i brought a carton of raspberries with me to work. bye, 6 oz of deliciousness. ALSO we have a lunch thing today where staff members are bringing caloric foods. i wish i could say i knew all my extra calories were coming from apples.

um, but rowing. so, i got there at 5:45 exhausted from running, biking to work and biking to the river on not enough sleep. and then we did some circuit training which involved planks, all kinds of lunges, weighted crunches, squat jumps, wall sits and other hell. it was actually mostly invigorating, even though squat jumps were not happening on my way-too-fatigued quads.

we got out on the water, figured out some tricks (this was our first time in the skinny "8" boat) for balancing, and rowed away. as the sun set. and it was so peaceful and beautiful and for the first time all day, i felt really happy and was beaming. even when we almost tipped over (constantly), when the mosquitoes started to come out...it was so, so wonderful. part of me thinks that rowing will be my savior.

egluck graciously drove me to her apartment where we were meeting our friends. i ate, but was barely present because i was so tired and on over-drive. but i went to bed at a (fairly) decent hour and read and slept well..minus the loud drunk people who decided it was cool to be yelling on the street (a residential street) at 3am on a TUESDAY NIGHT. not that i'm bitter.

food
blueberry pomegranate juice: 200c, 0p, 0f
strawberry-stuffed french toast: 332c, 12p, 1.5f

2 tbsp snickers salad: 100c, 1p, 1f

day 35: 5am run

so, i'm having a day. but this blog is not about my failures at life. it's about my successes at health. cough.

i have never been as happy to be at work as i am today. ever. and probably never again. holy. jeez.

it's mornings like this morning that remind me of this: i'm not actually an athlete. i'm in decent shape, but that doesn't mean i can run and bike and row all in one day. oops.

new resolution: i'm going to avoid running more than 20 minutes before commuting to work by bike. AND i'm not, not biking tomorrow. it's only going to be two days this week because i need to run intervals tomorrow. and if i say otherwise, i want you to embarrass and harass me publicly.

mama's tired. she may or may not have hit muscle failure on the last hill this morning. owww.

food
blueberry pomegranate juice: 200c, 0p, 0f

day 34: no more exercise!

but seriously. my goal for the day is to not exercise. to give my body a freaking break. it needs one.

also, i lost 0.6 lb last week, which is an improvement. this week, i'm shooting for a net calorie intake of 1,700 to see what happens. i have a feeling i'll have to play around with this for awhile until i figure out wtf my body wants.

food
strawberry-stuffed french toast: 332c, 12p, 1.5f
double-bean burrito: 411c, 14.35p, 5.2f

whoo! ready for the triathlon that's happening tomorrow. (yay biking, running and rowing in one day. ugh.)

day 33: calorie injection

i'm going to try to step up the fruits and vegetables this week, since i felt kind of unhealthy last week. we'll see how that goes.

my dad and i have had a lovely time together (he's been here since friday...did i mention that?) and i'm grateful that today is so beautiful because we got to spend some time outside. plus i need to go on a horrendously long run, which is why i'm wishing i could just zap some calories into my body because i don't particularly feel like eating.

food
fruit plate with two thin baguette slices and butter: 265c, 5p, 5f
5 crackers: 70c, 1p, 1f
1 oz cheddar: 110c, 7p, 0f
1.5c sesame chicken: 561c, 40.5p, 0f
1c fried rice: 333c, 12.5p, 1.5f
1c chocolate milk: 180c, 8p, 0f
1 meringue:  211c, 3p, 2.5f

totals: 1730c, 77p, 10f

exercise
so, i kept my heart rate right around 148 for the entirety of my long run...and cheated and did a little extra because i felt my pride was being wounded. i had to slow down, like, wayy down, to hit the right heart rate, which means that it took me FOREVER to run 8.1 miles. as in, 1:32:34. as in 5.3 mph. as in, slower than i've run in about 22 years. (exaggerating.)

anyway, i stuck to it, even though i ran 92 minutes instead of 80, and i ended up with a heart rate average of exactly 148, which i worked hard for. so, i guess that turned out well and was a victory even though it sort of feels like a failure. sigh.

8.1 miles, 92 minutes, 148 bpm: 972c

net: 758c. that's way too low, but i'm sick of eating, and really can't even think about consuming any more anything tonight. so, sorry, body. please don't go into starvation mode. <3 you.

day 32: everybody sees the wind blow

had rowing this morning out on the river. it was really wonderful, but super slow! i can't wait to actually row for two hours. can that start happening now? kthx.

strawberry pancakes: 280c, 3p, 0f

totals: 2063c, 84p, 3f
good thing i've had zero fiber today?

exercise
i kept my heart rate monitor on too long, so i'm just going to estimate, and i'll estimate kinda low. so, i worked out for a little over two hours, but a lot of that was sitting around and waiting..let's say 1 hour at 123 bpm:

day 31: things that are sore

...everything. my chest, my arms, my hip flexors, my abs, every joint that exists, my triceps...and we didn't even row!

it's been a really long day. since i went to bed soo late last night and couldn't stay awake to eat/couldn't stomach all the calories i was supposed to have, i'm feeling sort of sick and weak today. but that's normal, RIGHT?!

so my goal for the day is 2,400 net calories. that will even me out for yesterday and put me at 1,500 for today.

food
3 cups chocolate milk (throughout the day..yay fast calories):  510c, 24p, 0f
chicken and cashew wrap: 1,012c, 38p, 4f (...oops. i misread the label and that's about twice what i thought i was consuming.....)
turtle blizzard: 700c, 13p, 2f
1c greek salad: 200c, 4p, 0f
2 pieces punch pizza: 200c, 5p, 1f
1 piece rosemary flatbread: 30c, 1p, 1f
doubletree cookie: 314c, 4p, 0f

totals: 2222c, 75p, 6f....so turns out i'm gonna need to go running today. that's probably a good thing. still, ouch.
updated total: 2966c, 89p, 8f

exercise
40 minutes at a bpm under 167, 10 minutes at a bpm between 170 and 175. about 5.4 miles in 51 minutes, or a 6.4mph pace. not bad...i feel like my heart rate is already improving? is that possible?

net: 2238c (close to what i was aiming for..)

gratitude log
i'm going to get to take a nap soon.
my run today was easy. SO EASY. and i haven't run since sunday. i'm pretty proud of my body for that.

day 30: a flare of heat and light

as you've probably all guessed, this has been/continues to be a rough week. the good news is that i read an article this morning on the rumpus that was so heartbreakingly beautiful that it somehow made me feel connected and capable of getting past the next few days and weeks. thanks, perfectly crafted and folded words.

it probably also helped that i biked to work this morning, although a section of the greenway is closed, which meant it took me about twenty minutes to start on my way (it turns out that the "detour" leads you to a dead-end and you have to navigate through 18 parking lots to get to the next greenway entrance). but i didn't turn back.

egluck and i have rowing again tonight. hopefully no broken bones this time! it's our last practice before we go out on the water. i'm looking forward to the meditative state it puts me in. emily says she counts when she's sequencing her moves (legs, abs, arms, arms, abs, legs), and i made up a little song (music major?) to sequence mine. it focuses your mind just enough to get it away from all of the things that are going wrong, and allows you to just let it go.

sometimes i wonder what hell my life would be if i hadn't found endurance sports. seriously.

my roomie rachel had a fantastic idea for my blog: posting i'm something grateful for each day. i'm actually going to ramp it up and put things i'm grateful for at the end of each post, one for each time i edit them, log in etc. soo get ready for that.

----(later)
so, rowing went late, and then the CHAIN FELL OFF MY BIKE again (dammit), so EGluck graciously drove back to where i was (she'd just left) and took me home. argh! i didn't get home until almost 10 and i've been cleaning since. i still haven't eaten dinner and i was feeling too nauseated today to eat all of the food that i had at work (hence no yogurt), my back hurts and there's still more cleaning, plus i need to somehow pull this dinner together (it's on the stove, but is taking tooo lonnggg). i also think i'm going to have to do a grocery run and get some chocolate milk because i'm not going to meet my calorie needs for the day unless i eat until 3am. (i need like, 2100 more calories. aghh.)

but it's okay, because there are still things that i'm grateful for (see the list at the bottom).

for one thing, turns out rowing is wonderful. we haven't even been out on the water yet! since our class has a bootcamp component, we start each session with sprints, random stretches and other exercise challenges. on our first day, it was a 2k on the ergs (stationary rowing machine) and today it was burpees. if you don't know what they are, don't ever find out. those of us who knew when our coach said we were going to do them groaned. juuust groaned. but whatever. emily and i did beautifully.

then, we learned how to pick up the boat, carry it to the dock, put it in the water, get in, take it out, wipe it down and put it away. that sounds pretty simple but it's actually horrendously complicated because, after all, this is rowing. but we did well and the other girls in our class are hilarious and good-humored so it was actually fun.

i can't wait for saturday! we're going out on the river from the U, finally getting in the boat, not just carrying it. and poor emily is out of town for a wedding, so i'm going to have to row twice as much to make up for her absence. i'm not really worried about it... ;)

i have to admit, though, that i am a little bitter and angry at myself for not running today and not running enough lately. i think i need to really step up my game and make running my priority. if one thing in my day has to go, it should be biking, not running. i love both, but i'm training for a 10k. do i want to die in the middle of it? no. do i want to kick some serious runners butt? why, yes. yes i do.

food
1c blueberry/cranberry juice:  70c, 0p, 0f
huevos rancheros with a corn tortilla: 274c, 10p, 7f

sausage and fava bean pasta: 488c, 27.4p, 6f
two sticks string cheese: 160c, 16p, 0f
1c spicy v8: 50c, 2p, 2f
2 servings chicken and mushroom pasta:  900c, 45p, 4f (slightly different recipe)
2 meringues with strawberries and marscapone: 422, 6p, 5f
total: 2364c, 106.4p, 24f

exercise
an 80-minute bike ride to work, bpm 127: 645c
120 minutes of biking to rowing, bootcamp at rowing and a few other exercises, bpm 123: 1,055c

total: 1,700c

that's absurd!! for some reason i'm thinking that heart rate calories burned are more accurate than other calories. it takes more into account: your sex, your VO2 max as well as your weight, then takes the average bpm and calculates calories. maybe i was burning more earlier on than i thought i was and that's why my body went into semi-starvation mode? i'm certainly not gaining weight now...

net: 664. which means i'm going to have to eat an additional 900 calories tomorrow. sigh.

day 29: it's still raining

no run this morning. it was pouring when i woke up, so i went back to sleep and woke up to the rain pounding even harder. it's a shame because i could've used a run this morning. seriously.

------(update)
today, my nose ring fell out at work. i couldn't find it. i almost missed a meeting with a new intern who needs some guidance on the (very complicated) jargon of our organization, i didn't catch my boss's mistake on the CEO's schedule and thus didn't get her a document she might've needed, spent an inordinate amount of time dwelling and sniffled my way through at least 3/4 of a dance recital. it was a tough day.

i didn't get home from the recital until a few minutes ago. my brother called (!) and i needed some EmLar phone time, so those were also positive things that happened. anyway, i failed once again to run today. but today is the first time i haven't exercised at all in....forever. since day 17 if you're counting real exercise, so, what, 12 days? i guess that's acceptable. although seriously. running needs to start happening. my easy run is scheduled for tomorrow so i'm gonna try to do that before work or late after rowing.

oh, and i ate a brownie for dinner because i was feeling so nauseated and have been craving something sweet all day. nutrition content? -239482903 points. but it was delicious.

food
huevos rancheros with a corn tortilla: 274c, 10p, 7f
sausage and fava bean pasta: 488c, 27.4p, 6f
two sticks string cheese: 160c, 16p, 0f
1c spicy v8: 50c, 2p, 2f
mango greek yogurt: 140c, 14p, 0f
brownie: 500c, 5p, 0f (je.sus.)

totals: 1612, 74.4p, 15f

not too bad. and just about zero exercise, so there's that.

also it's not supposed to rain tomorrow. miranda can't bike, but i'm going to! it will be wonderful. (itwillbewonderfulitwillbewonderfulitwillbewonderful....sometimes mantras are important.)

day 28: rowing starts today

a few months ago, my friend emily g. and i decided that we wanted to sign up for crew. super exciting, super hardcore and a great workout, allows us to be outside on the RIVER (which, who else gets to do that) and we signed up for the one with "boot camp" which means extra workouts.

...turns out i'm terrified. i read through the handbook yesterday and folks, i understood about 1% of it. it's so confusing! so much jargon, so many "MUST"s and "DANGER"s etc. but it's going to be fine. and we're going to die a little but in a good way. at the end of three weeks, we have the option of signing up for rowing for the rest of the summer at a discounted price. and everyone that's doing this class with us is a beginner. all reasons i should feel better.

in other news, and i know this is going to sound crazy, but i woke up today after eating a lot really late last night and felt way thin. i measured my hips and waist and they were smaller than they've been in awhile. mind over matter or did my 1,500 net calorie consumption already start changing my body? (probably the former, but one can dream.)

ALSO this is the first day in seven work days that miranda and i didn't bike to work. we were afraid of the lightning/thunder thing happening this afternoon, but now the day is gorgeous and i'm annoyed with us for being cautious. i am going to bike (alone! how sad) on thursday and friday, though, so i'll get in my three days. hopefully crew won't kill me.

(i'm picturing my bike spinning out of control as my legs fall off and are tossed askew on summit as i'm riding home...)

my dad is visiting this weekend and i was hoping we could spend a lot of time outside paddle-boating, kayaking, canoeing, walking and the like, but apparently it's supposed to be weather from hell all weekend. awesome.

----- (update)
heart rate zones i figured out after reading today:
easy and long run: 129-149
tempo run: 167-177
intervals: 182-192
interval recovery: 120-129

bam.

(still terrified to go row! but excited.)

------(update)

rowing was actually lovely. minus the fact that we saw an experienced rower's broken wrist and our instructor had to rush him to the hospital. but whatevs. the rest was lovely and not really all that challenging for the most part, but i'm sure we'll ramp it up on thursday.

in other news, i definitely did not get to run. i got home and it was POURING (still is) and then there was lightning and thunder...and i hate myself a little for not running more! running is my thing, running is what i love to do, how i meditate and think clearly. i'm hoping it's not raining tomorrow morning because i'd love to go early.

food
2c blueberry cranberry juice: 140c, 0p, 0f
huevos rancheros: 352c, 13p, 8.5f
fava bean/sausage pasta: 488c, 27.4p, 6f
two sticks string cheese: 160c, 16p, 0f
1c spicy v8: 50c, 2p, 2f
blueberry greek yogurt: 140c, 14p, 0f
chicken with mushroom sauce: 491c, 29p, 2f

totals: 1821c, 101.4p, 18.5f

exercise
so i'm actually not sure how many calories i burned. i kept my heart rate monitor on at certain times to gauge averages, and i'm estimating 450c based on that.that seems a little high but i bet if we'd done all of the exercises in a row i would've felt like that was the right number.

net:  1371. so i need about 200 more calories which is perfect because i have some meringues in the oven right now..

day 27: a new approach

alright, guys. it's time to change my approach, since what i'm doing is definitely not working in the weight loss arena.

so last night, my friend karen commented on the blog post i wrote the other day about not losing any weight. she lost a ridiculous amount of weight last year (actually, about the same amount of weight i want to lose) and recommended that i start eating more. this is something i've been thinking about for the last week or so (even though i'm seriously, actually truly overwhelmed by the thought of eating more than i already am) in response to the non-moving of the scale. sure, i could exercise less, but i like how much i'm exercising, i love how strong my body is getting and how much of an endorphin kick i get every day. it gives me a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of invincibility. who would want to give that up?

so here's the thing. i'm going to try to consume a net calorie intake of 1,500 (instead of the 1,200 i've been aiming for). i'm going to do this partly through drinking some fluids with nutrients in them (what fatties are not supposed to do but i'm assuming this changes when you need to consume upwards of 2,500 calories a day). i need to go back to the doctor to check in on how other stuff is going, so i'll check in with him once i have an appointment, maybe sometime next week.

okay, guys. time to eat some food. wish me luck.

food
blueberry cranberry juice (only 30% juice! i spent like 20 minutes looking at 100% juice and must've gotten confused and frustrated...imagine how i feel now..): 140c, 0p, 0f
huevos rancheros: 352c, 13p, 8.5f
fava bean/sausage pasta: 488c, 27.4p, 6f
string cheese: 80c, 8p, 0f
spicy v8 (one cup): 50c, 2p, 2f
pomegranate greek yogurt: 140c, 14p, 0f
chocolate milk (one cup): 180c, 8p, 0f
chicken with mushroom sauce: 491c, 29p, 2f

totals: 1921c, 115.4p, 18.5f
i need 835 more calories....

more chicken: 491c, 29p, 2f
chocolate milk (1 1/3c): 280c, 10.5p, 0f
vanilla creme/strawberry thing: 178c, 5.5p, 2.5f

final totals:  2730c, 146.4p, 23f (andineverwanttoeatagainevereverever)

exercise
bike to work, 1:10, 137bpm: 634c
bike from work, 1:08, 138bpm: 622c
total: 1256c

final net: 1614. [note: i'm updating this on 6/14 after i remembered that i ate yogurt yesterday, hence the overage.] not bad. i just need to figure out how to eat during the whole day....time to read and go to bed.

day 26 part 3: totals

i'm exhausted, so i'm going to try to make this quick

2 servings breakfast burritos (breakfast and lunch): 450c, 38p, 13f
peach smoothie: 148c, 2.5p, 4f
chicken with mushroom sauce: 491c, 29p, 2f
1c chocolate milk: 180c, 8p, 0f
5 oz wine: 100c, 0p, 0f

totals: 1370c, 77.5p, 19f

net: 977c

...well, i guess we're back here again.

i need to wake up in like six hours. it's time for bed.

day 26 part 2: tempo runs and heart rate

did a tempo run today with my HRM and tried to hover right around the middle of my anaerobic zone, which is apparentoly where you're supposed to sit during tempo runs. i definitely had to slow my pace down fairly significantly, but i bet this will pay off handsomely soon, hopefully within a month or so.

writing this down before i forget, then making dinner and heading over to taylor's.

exercise:
running - 3.4 miles at around 6.2mph, average bpm: 160 = 393c.

day 26: ...

well, guys, i'm not having a great day, or a great weekend, turns out. hoping that tonight will redeem both.

i ate an absurd amount of food yesterday. i was really, unreasonably hungry all day and feeling a little bit reckless...but oh well. we all have those days, and i guess it was about time. coconut shrimp, fries, mojitos, banana/chocolate bread pudding...it was a calorie nightmare.

but today is better. i'll write later.

Saturday, June 11, 2011

day 25 part 2: frustrated

yep, i haven't lost weight or any inches this week. how is that possible? i'm training within my heart range, trying to hit and not exceed my net calorie intake...i'm really annoyed. maybe my thyroid medicine will help out within a few weeks? in any case, this is SO FRUSTRATING and why these hardcore phases rarely last for me. ughughughughugh.

food (warning: this is awful today. i've been like, starving all day which is absurd.)
3 pieces pizza alla vodka: 1038c, 49.2p, 4.8f
two cups chocolate milk: 360c, 16p, 0f
mocha with soy: 250c, 10p, 3f

totals so far: 1648c, 75.2p, 7.8f

ick.

exercise
i biked slowly for somewhere around an hour. my calorie estimator says that i hit about 400c

net: 1248c

...meaning that i need to exercise more before i eat.

can you tell that i'm feeling discouraged and unmotivated?

day 25: help!

okay, guys. so it's 1:30 and i've consumed about 1300 calories today (for no reason, i woke up STARVING). i definitely need to burn about 500 today and think i should bike over to this party, but it's an hour and a half away, so...i'm not going to. but i would love your help in motivating myself to do something to burn some of this off. help.

day 24 part 2: misery

i'll write more later, maybe. but the thing is that i got lost, had an awful voice lesson (the kind where i have to avoid crying in front of the one person whose opinion of my life matters right now), needed twenty minutes to recover before biking home, got horribly lost and ended up with a total of 40 miles today (counting this morning). oops.

exercise (update)
biking, 45 minutes @ 138 bpm: 549c
biking, 2 hours @ 123 bmp (hey, i had to pace myself because i didn't know where i was for awhile): 906c

...so running's not happening, because that brings the calorie total to 2035c burned today. dude.

who wants to come over and make me dinner? massive, ridiculously fatty and wonderful dinner?

ALSO. turns out that today i biked 40.18mi in 3hrs and 36 min. barf. (the calorie calculator i was using before estimates this at 1,500 calories. i'm sort of inclined to trust the first estimate, not because it's higher but because it's based on effort, but who knows.)

day 24: almost done! plus motivation/ing

this morning was the LAST MORNING of the commuter challenge. thank. jesus. we are TIRED, friends. t.i.r.e.d.d.d.d.d. addicted to commuting by bike, yes, but not every day. every day is hard when it takes two hours and ten minutes out of your day, not to mention waking up at 5:15 every day and having to go to bed at ten, which you never do and so you're extra tired, plus all of this is on top of running which, let's face it, is absolutely brutal after a bike ride....but it's been an AMAZING week. i'm so, so glad we did this! a billionth shout out to miranda for doing this with me. and for committing to about three times a week for the rest of the summer. whoo!!

to celebrate, we got breakfast at mickey's this morning. YUM. as yelp mentioned, the servers are grumpy. and old. but the food was deliciously fatty and reasonably priced. i can't post the picture of me on here because i have DIRT ALL OVER MY FACE (it rained really, really hard this morning and my teeth are STILL chattering, four hours later), but that doesn't mean i can't post one of her...

my trusty bike-panion

just in case i forget mid-summer, here are the things i love about biking to work:
  • feeling a sense of accomplishment when i finally reach the front door of my office
  • spending two hours a day outside
  • riding over the river in various places and marveling at its beauty
  • getting to know friedrich and all of his quirks
  • finding kinship with the other bikers who are out
  • knowing that by the time i'm sipping my morning coffee, i've burned 500 calories
  • challenging my body on hills and unfamiliar paths with something i'm not great at yet, but will be
  • racing to keep up with miranda, who is in about the same shape i'm in, but is way, way better at bikes (srsly, watch that girl go up a hill)
  • listening to podcasts in the morning and associating places in my path to places in stories i hear
sigh. i'm the sappiest. oh, also, my mood has been incredible this week, probably because i'm getting ridiculous endorphins. also, apparently heart rate zones have different emotional effects in addition to those fat burning things i wrote about yesterday. whoo! i'll write about those sometime, maybe...

ALSO a few of you have told me that this blog is inspiring you to change things about your lifestyle. i can't tell you how humbling that is and how incredibly happy it makes me. you guys are SO motivating and your remarks about my blog and responses to my posts are incredibly wonderful.

now. the only thing i want to ask in addition is that you comment! i'd love to see what you guys are thinking, if you have questions about any of the stuff i'm doing, want to tell me that i look like i've gained weight in the last few weeks etc...kidding. or am i?

all i have to say to you is "love" and thank you for being such wonderful friends/family.

okay, back to that blog thing.

now that i have a heart rate monitor that's up and running, i'm going to attempt to calculate calories using my heart rate and estimated vo2 max, which is somewhere around 48 (yes, you can just go ahead and wikipedia that). also, i got a body fat percentage estimator with my HRM, but those numbers will not see the light of day until they're reasonable. (ugh.)

here's a thing: biking actually has me within the fat burning range of heart rates. so, by the end of the day, i will have spent over 10 hours burning mostly fat. awesome.

now, for initial food and exercise stats.

food
2 eggs (fried in butter? yum): 180c, 12p, 0f
2 pieces buttered wheat toast: 201c, 4.5p, 2.5f
3 strips bacon: 138c, 9.5p, 0f
1c hashbrowns: 410c, 4.5p, 5f

totals so far: 929c, 30.5p, 7.5f

bam.

exercise
estimating about an hour and five minutes, average heart rate of 144 (i'm dumb and accidentally deleted stats before i double-checked...grr) biking: 580c, which is higher than i've been estimating so far. i've checked around a little bit, done some re-calculating and i think that's accurate, but i guess we'll find out when i gain hundreds of pounds instead of losing weight.

net so far: 349c

whoo! it's not negative! how amazing is that.

okay, okay. so i pushed myself really hard and didn't sleep enough. this was obviously a mistake for which i am paying. but, whatever. i'm learning that you can't get less than eight hours of sleep when you're making your body do 2.5+ hours of moderate exercise a day. that's a real thing.

mom, dad and aunt rita: i'm fine, please stop worrying. especially you, mom. i'm watching you. (seriously. mom. i'm fine.)

last night was...a little bit of a blur. as i mentioned in yesterday's post, it was not a happy evening. i got home a little after seven and decided to eat some popcorn, watch some parks and rec and take a nice little nap before my run. which, by the way, was supposed to be intervals.

warning: THIS PART IS MILDLY GROSS. but i couldn't fall asleep and when i started to consider getting up to get ready to run, i got really nauseated. like, dry heave for half an hour nauseated. okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but only a slight one.

i decided i was probably a little dehydrated (despite the freakish amount of water i ingest every moment of every day) and over-tired and that it would be a good idea to take the night off. also, intervals? normally that's a really important workout day, but since i'm pushing myself really hard during several parts of my bike ride, i think my stamina will improve anyway. not to mention that cross-training up giant steep hills things, which will help develop my muscle. biking is definitely not an option as a permanent replacement of interval runs, but for this week i think it will suffice.

and look, i know i shouldn't feel guilty about skipping my run yesterday (my net caloric intake was still slightly under 1,200...ugh) because it would've been unhealthy to run but i still feel a little bad. i'm going running tonight, but don't worry: i only have to go for 15 minutes. i could probably do that after raising a car above my head. (if i were actually strong enough to do such a thing.)

the most annoying thing about last night (yes, worse than nausea), was that i couldn't fall asleep. i finally popped some melatonin at 9:30 and went to bed a little after 10. then i slept through my alarm (5:15) and woke up at 5:55. i was supposed to meet miranda at 6:50, which is probably about a forty minute bike ride at a decent speed. i finally got on my bike after getting food ready for the day at 6:35 and booked it over to st. paul, where i found a cheerful miranda chatting with a new friend on the grass somewhere around 7:10. no big deal. twenty minutes late. goodness.

turns out miranda is also exhausted. (surprise! it's not like we've biked 95 miles this week. oh wait...) BUT the best part of the morning was that in celebration of bike/walk week, there were mini-parties all over the city. i passed two on my way to meet miranda, and then we went to the one in rice park (in front of the ordway) where there was free coffee, yummy bread, bananas, orange juice and cereal bars. oh, and we got interviewed (with miranda's new buddy) TWICE. on two different video cameras. how exciting. (read: infuriating.) but look how cute we looked!!!

Bike/Walk week party in Rice Park! (Me, left and Miranda, right)

now i'm at work, pushing through a bunch of little tasks while waiting for 18 billion people to approve things so i can keep working. story of my life. i guess sometimes it's a good thing to have a bunch of time to waste?

a few other things:

i'm going to run today, and depending on how i feel tomorrow, i will run or skip my run. i'm trying to be okay with that.

i get my heart rate monitor in the mail today! hopefully this one will not be horribly defective. i'm going to start heart rate training.

for those of you who don't know about the heart rate craze thing, it's a way of training that helps you to train your heart to do more while working less. basically, it makes your cardiovascular system much more efficient. having a lower heart rate (read: somewhat lower than your busting-my-ass heart rate but higher than your leisurely walk heart rate) means that more of the energy (calories) you're burning comes from fat (as opposed to carbohydrates). i learned all this from the personal trainer i had for a few months a few months ago, but i wasn't really hardcore about it and in any case, i worked out with her while i was injured and couldn't run, so i didn't use it on running.

i'm excited to see what this does for my body. i've got about a month until the 10k, and i'm hoping that this type of training will help. it basically means that i'll have to run slowly (to keep my heart rate down) for awhile, but over time i'll be able to run faster and keep my heart rate around the same. this means that i will actually (hopefully!!) start burning fat and losing weight. get. pumped.

i'll post my totals later today...i wrote them down last night but left that notebook at home. by the way, i may or may not fall asleep at my desk today. slash on the way home. we're considering walking up one or more of the four AWFUL hills we have to hit on the way home. we'll see.

day 22 part 2: admitting defeat

so, i'm so exhausted from not sleeping and biking and running that i got home and became extremely nauseated and almost threw up. nbd. needless to say, running is not happening today. i got some chipotle (the most calorie-rich food i could think of that has some healthy elements and isn't fried) and then i'm going to crash.

i'll post totals tomorrow.

day 22: i weigh...(and hrm)

FIVE POUNDS LESS than last week!!

...just kidding. my scale is broken, or wasn't working this morning for some reason. it won't turn on and the battery shouldn't be anywhere near dead. anyway i'm going to try again later. the reality will probably be much less exciting than the normal two pounds. sigh.

update!!!

i contacted timex about the problem i'm having with my heart rate monitor. i got an e-mail back almost immediately with this message, and nothing else. not even a name or a greeting or a signature.

"You should return that device to the place of purchase."

....

womp womp.

i did, and i guess i'm getting a new one in the mail tomorrow. (yay amazon and its amazing return policies.) guess this will motivate me to finally take the other 10,000 things i have to return by mail to the ups behind my apartment. sometimes life is hard.

day 21 part three: youcandoityoucandoityoucandoit

okay, first of all, yes i realize that the amount of exercise that is happening to my body (that's sort of what it feels like) right now is extremely intense. BUT this is only one week, i'm in really good cardiovascular health, i'm not pushing myself to do anything but finish my bike rides and runs, and this is way more about proving to myself that i can finish something that's difficult than about any other goal. so, just so you know. don't worry!!! but thanks for your concerns.

now. on to the post.

okay, pause. i need to do these calculations first so i can eat the right amount of calories. i can't say why i didn't plan this beforehand except that maybe i was worried i wouldn't finish my run. but i did. so bam.

food
peach smoothie:  148c, 2.5p, 4f
breakfast tacos (have you figured out that this is my favorite breakfast? each week with different ingredients): 334c, 19p, 6.5f
orzo with chickpeas: 327c, 11p, 5f
vanilla creme and jam: 178c, 5.5p, 2.5f
1/2c granola with 1/2c soymilk: 314c, 8.5p, 4.5f
teriyaki chicken: 585c, 7.5p, 2.5f
4 graham crackers: 210c, 3p, 4.5f

totals so far: 2096c, 57p, 29.5f

exercise
i'm just combining my totals from today, but each way it was about 13.3 miles (yeah, turns out my odometer resets randomly....since i think yesterday was "shorter" but we got lost?) at at least 11mph: 1,019c
i ran for a little over 30 minutes somewhere around 6mph. i don't really care about my speed this week, at least i'm trying not to. all that matters is finishing the minimum amount of a run on the training plan: 367c

total: 1386c

net: 710c

...so i need to ingest another 500c. if i eat another serving of chicken, my totals will be:
2681c, 64.5p, 34f

and my net will be: 1295c

perfect! okay. i will eat the hell out of that chicken...and figure out something else for dinner for the rest of the week. ugh. so much for saving on gas money?

weekly stats: (obviously the averages on food and exercise will be weird because the commuter challenge started in the middle of the seven days. so, whatever. maybe i'll do a commuter challenge post on saturday. if i'm still alive.)
goal 1: posting at least every other day. CHECK.
goal 2: keep logs of food and exercise. CHECK.
average food totals: 1897c, 71p, 19f
average calories burned through exercise per day: 692c
average net: 999c (i calculated that differently this week, but i bet it's more accurate than before)
goal 3: try a new thing each week. CHECK. (commuting by bike to work!)
goal 4: spend an hour outside a day. CHECK. (yeah...i STILL am not really blogging about this, although i'm obviously spending a ton of time outside!)
goal 5: mindfulness in healthy living. CHECK. (something i could discuss more, but i usually do in any long post)

goals from last week:
more fiber!!: better, still not great.
hit net 1,200 calories most days: this was actually worse this week than last. ugh.
increase speed for long run to 6.9mph, at least for a lap (2.7 miles): that didn't happen, but sunday was BOILING so sorry i'm not sorry.
remember to blog about being outside and mindfulness: i'm doing this, but not as i expected to.

goals for next week
keep on keepin' on. oh, and stretching. that needs to get better somehow. ooh here's a goal: GO TO YOGA OUTSIDE THIS SATURDAY. yes plzthx.

i'll post weight loss/inches tomorrow morning. also, i think i'm going to start trying to do this on sundays instead of wednesdays. i think it will make the week make more sense since meals are similar etc.

i should write more...but i'm dying of exhaustion and somehow have to eat some chicken. wish me luck. i might wake up in chicken bones tomorrow morning.

day 21 part two: sometimes i'm surprised by my hardcoreness

miranda and i biked home in 98 degree weather. true story. and it wasn't even that bad, because as we were moving, the already strong wind got better and better. except when it was against me, which was true for the last half of my ride.

um, so i got my heart rate monitor and PANIC. whenever i put the battery in the chest strap, it makes this high pitched "beep" that's continuous, and it won't detect my heart rate and the watch won't even connect with it. i'm annoyed. anyone have any ideas? i can't call their service center until 8am tomorrow. which sucks.

in other news, i'm going to wait another hour before going running. i could really use some encouragement, guys. don't worry. i will be plenty hydrated and i just ate some food, so your well-wishing and words of motivation would be most appreciated.

day 21: commuter challenge part two

this morning's ride was wonderful. absolutely wonderful. i figured out a way to strap my bag to my bike rack, which was ridiculous but effective, wore really breezy clothes and enjoyed my newly-discovered easy gears.

one question: how the heck am i going to eat 2,700 calories today!?!? i'm panicking.

day 20 part 3: final totals

the bike ride home was miserable...until i discovered two easier gears on my bike. good thing i'm so good at old-fashioned gears. oh well. at least it wasn't just me being weak....simply me being dumb, which is more acceptable.

food
1 c homemade granola: 480c, 10p, 8f
peach and banana smoothie: 140c, 2p, 3f
orzo salad: 327c, 11p, 5f
vanilla creme and homemade jam: 178c, 5.5p, 2.5f
teriyaki chicken thighs and noodles: 1169c, 15p, 5.5 f

totals: 2094c, 43.5p, 24f

exercise
my bike odometer reset itself on my ride today. i'm guessing it happened when i put my right gear all the way up. it must've hit the "mode" button and kicked out all the data. this will be a rough estimate, and i'll go on the way conservative side. this afternoon's count will be more accurate.

first ride: 560c (one calculator estimated 926, so i will probably adjust this number once i see how this afternoon's ride - with odometer/speedometer intact - goes.)
second ride: 495c

..okay, i feel like that's aboslutely not accurate. but the heart rate monitor will help, starting with wednesday's ride.

net: 1039. not bad.

although i'm definitely going to have to buy some more food this week. ugh.

day 20: amazon one-click, you win again

....heart rate monitor. it will be here tomorrow. sorry, future ana.

day 20: sometimes i take breaks to blog

biking to work this morning was exhausting, hot, miserable and absolutely wonderful. i'm tired, my body is tired, but i feel really energized...even though i'm simultaneously exhausted. it's weird, but i'm okay with it.

the thing is that the weather is so beautiful that i can't help but be grateful to be outside, grateful for my strong legs and my lovely bike, for my friend miranda who's being brave with me and trying this out, which is probably what kept me from chickening out this morning. i'm so, so happy i didn't chicken out.

the best, most rewarding part of the ride was when we finally (finally.) got to st. paul and had to climb even more hills, but for what felt like the first time during the entire trip, there were actually hills that went DOWN! how amazing to have wind blowing the drops of sweat off your face and arms, to feel like your front wheel is wiggling just a little too much because you're going so fast, but you don't care because the cramp behind your left thigh is actually not hurting for the first time in about an hour. lovely. i'm actually sort of excited for the bike home. crazy.

i am nervous, though, about running. luckily, my friend emily told me this morning that she and a couple of our other friends might join me for the 10k. that will be wonderful and motivating! i think that's what will get me through this week of training - knowing that i want to kick all of their butts at running that race. thanks, friends, for acting as my nemeses for the next few weeks.

also, my avoidance of issues that are making my life difficult paid off once again! when i got to work this morning, i wet my hair in the sink, since i felt too awkward all of last week to ask our properties guy about using the showers we have in the building. when he saw me, he assumed i had. so, awesome. i can shower after biking this week. i may not anyway.

fail of the day: i got up early to make meals for the week, and FORGOT MY BREAKFAST ON THE COUNTER! luckily, i remembered, when i got to work, that i brought granola. so i just dumped a ton of granola on top of my peach smoothie. it was weird. but at least i got to eat breakfast.

alright. i'm going to start the calorie tracking and then go back to doing work. oh, work.

food
1 c homemade granola: 480c, 10p, 8f
peach and banana smoothie: 140c, 2p, 3f

totals so far:  620c, 12p, 11f

exercise

yeah, i might like this calorie-burning-machine thing. i may or may not eat my words tomorrow.

day 19: sometimes bodies are gross

warning: in the first paragraph i am going to say something a little bit gross. if you get grossed out by things like blood etc., please skip it.

so, today i went for a long run. it was really hot. probably somewhere around 90. i waited until 6, but it hadn't cooled down much. so, i ran 2.7 miles, took a short break, drank some water, ran another 3.1. and don't worry, i was so dehydrated that i had really bad side cramps and definitely threw up a little in my nose. it was classy. i haven't done that in about a year, but it always happens when i'm on an intense run and not adequately prepared/hydrated etc.

gross part's over.

i didn't hit my goal of 6.9mph, but whatever. it was hot, i was tired and dehydrated...i'm not going to let myself feel bad about it. i will get there, i will hit my goal. i just need to be a little patient and let my body adjust to the heat. right? right.

after my run, i went grocery shopping (okay, about an hour later after i felt like i could move again) and bought a little bottle of chocolate milk along with the week's supplies. i read a long time ago that chocolate milk is a great thing to drink after running because of the protein and the carbs. i was so exhausted by this time (and a little dizzy) that i went for it. plus, i love chocolate milk and hardly ever let myself drink it. (sometimes i'm five years old.)

the commuter challenge starts tomorrow. i have to get up in about six hours...but i'm too wired to go to bed. so i'm blogging. wish me luck! 12.6 miles each way, five days this week. and i'm going to keep training for that 10k, so basically i'm going to need to eat constantly, which i'm not exactly excited about. that's new, i usually love eating. but lately my appetite hasn't been that intense. which is great.

also, this weekend a few people told me that they're reading my blog and i got SO EXCITED! if you are, please comment, please follow etc. it helps to know you're out there, cruel world. keeps me on my game.

food
breakfast burrito: 197c, 12.5p, 2.5f
french toast: 453c, 13p, 1f
1 oz cheese: 112c, 6.5p, 0f
chocolate milk: 300c, 16p, 0f
burrito: 380c, 12p, 3f

totals: 1442c, 60p, 6.5f

one hour of running:
2.7 miles at 6.8mph
3.1 miles at 6.4mph
7 minutes at ? 6.4mph?

day 18: all the things

okay, guys. so i failed and definitely didn't post yesterday. but i promise i had a good excuse! i'm at a reunion for my choir, something i just decided to do a few days ago, and haven't been near/on a computer in about 800 million years. (that is an exaggeration, but only a mild one.)

i've been biking a good amount down here, since i'm only staying a few miles away from my alma mater. i also went for a run today, which may or may not have melted much of my skin off. but oh well. the winter was so, so long this year that i don't even mind the melting heat. seriously.

i'm going to try to give a play by play of the last two days. so...here goes.

food on day 17:
breakfast burrito: 197c, 12.5p, 2.5f
cherry tomato pasta: 328c, 11p, 3f
greek yogurt: 140c, 14p, 0f
two avocado tacos: 562c, 9.5p, 14f
one margarita: 253c, 0p, 0f
one bacardi lemonade: 220c, 0p, 0f

totals:  1700c, 47p, 19.5f

fiber is less horrible than usual. could've stepped up the protein, but what are you gonna do.

exercise on day 17:
biked a little over a mile...awesome. 50c

net: 1650c

food on day 18:
an orange: 62c, 1p, 3f
two scrambled eggs: 140c, 12p, 0f
one piece wheat toast with a pat butter: 164c, 4p, 3f
three strawberries: 18c, 0p, 0f
half a banana: 50c, 0.5p, 1.5f
pasta salad: 342c, 16p, 2.5f
palak paneer: 300c, 20p, 6f
1/2c rice: 150c, 6p, 1f
three pieces naan: 240c, 10p, 0f

one bacardi lemonade: 220c, 0p, 0f

totals: 1686c, 69.5p, 17f

exercise on day 18:
a 30-minute run. i was going at least 6.3 mph the whole time and did the last five minutes more quickly, so a conservative estimate is:  373c
biking: about ten miles today. let's be conservative again and say: 330c

net: 983c

..that seems wrong somehow. i'm going to look into this calorie calculating thing for cycling more closely....

see? i blogged. i'll blog more when i'm not about to die of exhaustion.

day 16: plans change, so do we

tonight, i had plans to bike over to a friend's after dinner, but we ended up rescheduling. i'm sad that i didn't get to see him, but really glad that i got a chance for a much, much longer bike ride. (by the way: i think i've narrowed it down to friedrich, like in the sound of music, or charles - charlie for short. what do we think?)

work today was somewhat excruciating. not because i didn't have enough to do, not even really because i had too much to do, but it was one of those days where my head was not in the game. i got a lot done in the morning and early afternoon, and then my brain started to fall apart. it happens to all of us.

anyway, i was badly, badly in need of a run when i got home. so i went. and it was awful! this has been a really bad running week. i mean, it makes sense. i pushed myself really hard yesterday and sunday, but it's still annoying. i was supposed to do an easy run between 20 and 30 minutes long. i ran 15, took a two minute walking break, ran another 5, another walking break, and then another 5 with a kick at the end. so ultimately, i made it through the run, through more than the minimum, but i was still not overly pleased.

i ate dinner, did some mapping, found out my plans were changing, and got out my bike.

it was a lovely, lovely, lovely ride. thank GOD my chain is fixed. i felt like i was just being and idiot and breaking it somehow every time i used it. but no, this time my stupidity is NOT the cause of mass disaster. (whew.) and my bike and i are bonding in a very serious way. i think he's the one.

i flew around lake of the isles, then lake calhoun twice, then back to lake of the isles and around uptown a bit before coming home. [i REALLY need a basket. does anyone know where i can find one? all of the ones at the bike shop where i bought my baby didn't quite fit, so i probably need a milk crate or something. i've been looking but have so far been unsuccessful.] i listened to the story, watched the water, felt the wind, ate some bugs, and nearly smiled my face off. the night got so much better. and i think i'm actually going to bed at a decent time tonight. i am on a roll.

food
breakfast burrito: 197c, 12.5p, 2.5f
cherry tomato pasta: 328c, 11p, 3f
vanilla creme and homemade jam: 178c, 5.5p, 2.5f
two boiled eggs: 155c, 12.5p, 0f
half a piece of swiss cheese: 30c, 2p, 0f
one biscuit: 53c, 1.5p, 0f
lettuce wraps:  272c, 40p, 1.5f

totals: 1213c, 85p, 9.5f
damn you, fiber.

exercise
i'm going to way underestimate my speed since i didn't time myself today.
25 minutes running at 6.2mph: 307c
55 min biking: 481c
total: 788

net: 425

...ugh. okay, can i actually ingest another 800 calories before bed? i mean, theoretically. but i won't go quite that far, although if i'm only considering running i still need another 300 or so calories.

smoothie time?

food update
smoothie with leftover whole milk (from creme), pineapple and raspberries with a little honey: 366c, 10.5p, 8f
new totals: 1579c, 95.5p, 17.5f

all that protein is seriously making me feel way fuller and happier than i've been in awhile. i wish i'd figured that out about 18 years ago.

new net: 791c. so much for that 1200 goal.

**i need some advice
as many of you know, next week i'm doing the commuter challenge, which means biking the 13-ish miles to work, and 13-ish back. on top of that, i need to keep training for this 10k. here is my question: do i need to keep my net calories at 1,200? does anyone have any ideas? if so, could you please provide me with a feeding tank? thx.

day 15: my bike is fixed! for the third time.

my toe is bleeding. it's fine.

my bike is fixed! this time hopefully for good. i brought it back to the shop where i bought it and they adjusted one screw that was responsible for the chain falling off. they also did a few other things that should make the bike smoother to ride, tucked away some wires etc. etc. etc. the owner also sprayed some stuff into my trunk lock so it will open without bending my key now. magic. (i think he felt bad that no one caught this the first time. but honestly i can ride it around for 20 minutes without the chain falling off, so....) anyway. the owner is really great and i got to chat with a couple of the people that work there and i'm just a little in LOVE with this place.so nice and un-pretentious for people who suck at bikes like me.

running today was exhausting. wednesdays are speed days and today's intervals were four minutes long. i almost stopped at three intervals (i was supposed to do 3-4), but pushed through. thank you, inability to under-achieve until i'm injured. still, ouch.

my plan was to go out biking after dinner, but somehow it was 8 when i got back from running, 9 before i finished making custard and 9:30 before i finished dinner.

agh. some day these posts will get more interesting. but for now..

food
breakfast burrito: 197c, 12.5p, 2.5f
cherry tomato pasta: 328c, 11p, 3f
pomegranate greek yogurt: 140c, 14p, 0f
1/2 cantaloupe: 100c, 2p, 2f
1 inch cube swiss cheese: 60c, 4.5p, 0f
2 biscuits: 106c, 3p, 0f
lettuce wraps: 272c, 40p, 1.5f
french toast: 453c, 13p, 1f

total:  1656c, 100p, 10f
..yeah, i tried that fiber thing with cantaloupe but turns out it doesn't have a lot of fiber. i need to get some wheat germ for next week.

exercise
running, 4 4-minute intervals with 2-minute recovery: 1 min walk, 1 min jog, along with 5 min warm-up/cool down: 421c

net: 1235c

i was outside for more than an hour today, mindful enough to push through my difficult workout, and in the last two days have used the mixer, bowls, salad spinner and containers that my mom and aunt got for me about 1400000 billion times. i'll tell you about those in another post..
