day 28: i really wanna go out/i really wanna go outside and make it light all day

oh, song lyrics.

so, yes. i've been exercising. monday, i got the job i've been waiting to hear from. DREAM JOB! doing public policy organizing at a faith-based organization. i went for a run and went to hip hop which was extra fun this week. i did yoga the next morning, went on another run, and took wednesday and thursday off. tonight, i'll go for another run and pack all of my life back into boxes because we're moving again for the second time in three months. boo.

i also made some amazing brownies last night. they're sitting on the stove waiting to be eaten...mmm...

still can't find my USB thingy that uploads data from my HRM but i'm sure it's in the apartment somewhere. running has been going really well and i feel like i'm finally starting to get my stride back. my pace is getting better and better and my heart rate is staying relatively low, which is always a good sign. i'm hoping that next week i can start a 10k training plan, and then follow it with a half marathon training plan. running right through the winter.

also, i need a head lamp, a fuel belt and one of those mouth cover things to protect me from the cold. santa, are you reading this?

day 23: too lazy to eat

so i've been exercising, at least yesterday i did. i ran over five miles, but i also only ate one meal because...i forgot. so i ate a lot of snacks at a party and it was fine. but my laziness is becoming extreme.

it's now 1:13. i've been awake, on and off, for four hours. i'm starving and really thirsty. have i done anything to address this? of course not.

my goals for the day: go on a run and a long bike ride. eat more than one meal.

sounds simple enough, right?

 -------

okay. so i went on a run, but it was about half the distance i wanted to go. i guess i was tired, worn out from my run on saturday and probably dehydrated.

i didn't go on a bike ride.

my net calorie intake was still probably 1,200 or so, not of healthy things but at least i ate, and what running i did was at a really great pace. so, inch by inch. i need to find that garmin thing that reads information off my HRM!

day 20: back on my running little feet

that's a misleading title. i have the feet of a clown. with big feet.

so i'm 99% sure i had a mild case of food poisoning from something i ate for lunch on monday. it lasted a few days, and even today i had the remnants of a bad stomachache. oh well.

this morning, i somehow finally dragged myself out of bed to do yoga. i couldn't believe how tight my muscles were after a week and a half of not doing it. i'm thinking about waking up for yoga tomorrow. i usually don't do it two days in a row, but this morning was so enlightening that it just might be time.

after work, i went for a quick four-mile run. my stomach killed afterward and i couldn't stop coughing (i'm actually wondering if i have a cold-induced asthma thing, remembering running in the cold last year), but i made it. and, as always, i felt much better after i went.

on my way back again, after yet another set-back. the important thing is that i get back in, right?

day 17: ugh!

bad day. came home to run and ran about ten minutes before i had a stomach cramp the size of my entire body. OW. and no idea why....i was well hydrated, i hadn't eaten in awhile but wasn't starving...there are a lot side cramps one can overcome, and this was not one of them.

i am annoyed.

and still feeling generally awful. i wonder if i'm going to make it to hip hop tonight. so much for a really fun, healthy monday.

(obviously grumpy.)

day 15: collarbones continued

i'll explain the collarbones thing when i'm feeling inspired. promise.

ran over seven miles for the first time since the injury tonight. it felt amazing. oh, and i did all of my laundry.and made wheat english muffins that actually have the texture of bread. win.

it was nice to have a day to myself. because of MEA, there wasn't opera today. and while i missed my kids a lot (true story), it was great to sleep in and get some things done. and then to actually pretend to be a human and run really far. that part especially.

day 15: time to run

yesterday, it really was time to sleep.

the previous three nights, i got...what. four hours of sleep, five max? i forgot what it feels like to be constantly exhausted, and that's nothing in comparison to how i lived in college and high school.

so last night i got home, once again took the night off of exercise (i know, bad ana) and fell asleep at 6:30. i slept until about 1:30 (am), woke up for about an hour and went back to sleep until 7:15. bam.

tonight, i'm running. my body is starting to scream to run a little bit, which i always kind of love because it confirms the intense psychological addiction to running with a physical one. is it okay to like being addicted to something healthy? at this level, probably.

but yeah. i still feel like garbage. this week has been really fun, though. for that i'm extremely grateful.

day 13: collarbones

today was a good reminder of all that i have to be grateful for. sometimes when i'm having trouble motivating myself to work out, i remind myself what an awesome thing it is that our bodies are able to perform miracles. we can train our bodies to run unreasonable amounts of miles, lift things heavier than we are, move in ways that they never could in ordinary life...and it's pretty sweet.

of course, i didn't exercise today. but hey! i'm really sore and emily has a friend from south africa in town. so i had stuff to do. tomorrow's another day.

yep, that's right. i'm in a hip hop class with julia. we dance on mondays, and we can skip when we need to, and it's $12 and it's a great $12 to spend. because it was really fun and i burned almost as many calories dancing as i did running today.

day 11: a lazy weekend

i don't know if it's the sickness or the stress or the cold or what, but i've been exhausted all weekend. i've exercised about zero, haven't eaten very well and have slept at all the wrong times.

it's alright, though. i'm doing laundry, made my shopping list for the week and i'm drinking water in preparation for a run that will take place somewhere along the way.

i'll write a real post at some point. after the yawning stops.
--------

things that make me feel human again:
1) talking to/spending time with close friends and family
2) running
3) cooking/baking
4) being hydrated

i went on a pretty awesome run, considering the month i couldn't run and that i've only been running again for two weeks. yes, i'm slow, but i'm getting my distance back. i need to be careful not to push it too much, though. that could result in another injury.

anyway, my ipod shuffled me into happiness again, i felt the endorphins kick in and once i hit my stride, there was no stopping me.

day 10: saturdays

every saturday during the school year, i wake up around 7, get to the opera center by 8 and stay until 2. this makes eating a challenge, and many weeks i don't eat until after opera. mostly because my psyche can only handle doing food prep for five days (monday-friday) and additional preparation seems overwhelming.

this morning, i did alright. i grabbed a banana and some soup and got coffee on my way in, which isn't actually nutrition but is unreasonably delicious. if you haven't noticed, i've been on a latte kick this week. it's not something i'm planning on giving up soon.

yesterday, i didn't exercise at all. i let myself sleep in a little bit instead of doing yoga after the thursday from hell. (by the way, i bought a bunch of clothes on thursday for various things and bought a size 4 dress! sure, it's stretchy so it doesn't really count, but still. i'll take it.) i didn't eat very well, didn't eat dinner and once again partied myself to sleep. sometimes this is completely necessary.

i'll update later. i have a wedding to go to tonight of someone i don't know...but maybe it'll be fun? my fortune cookie yesterday seems to think so.

day 8: small victories

during periods of intense stress, i usually stop eating. if the stress continues, this phase lasts for about two weeks. then, i start eating and soon i'm gorging myself on horrendous amounts of food. this is what's happened over the last month. and today i'm contemplating not eating dinner. it's 9:19pm. i don't want this cycle to start over again.

it's funny how much our bodies are affected by stress. my back hurts, despite all of the yoga, my stomach is churning even though there isn't any real imminent danger, my throat is tight and i can't release the tension in my neck and shoulders.

and though i know that i should probably go for a run tonight to release some of the stress, the other side effect that lasts all the way through the stressful months is incredible fatigue. which, somehow, doesn't actually allow me to fall asleep.

exercise usually keeps this cycle at bay, as do decent eating habits. but sometimes there's only so much you can do before life kicks you in the face.

so, to kick it back, i'm trying to practice some serious gratitude, to be thankful for all of the wonderful things that are constants and are happening in my life right now, to be grateful for the opportunities i have to change these stressful situations and to look forward to my future state of extreme happiness which, i'm sure, will come along soon.

until then, i'm going to try to not stop eating or to eat too much. and i will do the exercise thing just as soon as i am able. practicing patience with myself. that's another thing.

day 7: still alive

i woke up this morning with a horrendous headache. i drank some water, did yoga, went back to bed for a little while, and woke up with an even worse one. took some tension headache, treated myself to a latte, and got to work. sometimes this is a small miracle. sometimes a big one.

i'm already way over budget on my calories for the day, but i think that's an okay reversal, since in normally don't eat that many calories until dinner, which is a bad practice.

i'll update throughout the day...

okay, no. this was an awful eating day. damn you stress and poor planning.

the upside is that even after i was at work until almost 7, even after emily and i made english muffins and ate dinner at 9pm etc etc etc, i still managed to go on a run. and it was, as usual, what i needed.

day 6: two halves down, two to go

signed a lease today. the apartment hell is almost over.

other things seem to be settling slowly, but today i'm once again overwhelmed. after work, rachel and i went to see one more place before signing our lease, and when i got home i felt like i'd gotten hit by a truck. just absolutely physically exhausted and tired and achy. but i made myself go for a run, even after i had to come back in to charge my ipod, and i'm glad i did.

on nights like these, running is sort of like praying. it's not just that it's meditative, that your body hits a rhythm and starts to propel you forward. it's also that somehow things start to make sense in your brain, or at least in mine.

i get these daily emails called "meditations" and last week, one of them went like this:

"prayer is sitting in the silence until it silences us, choosing gratitude until we are grateful, and praising god until we ourselves are an act of praise."

i've never had a traditional view of what constitutes prayer, but i think it necessarily must include our bodies. this is an entirely different blog post, probably.

running makes me feel powerful not only because it's amazing that our bodies are capable of carrying us miles and miles, but because our brains can travel miles, too. and when my feet are hitting the pavement, somehow nothing seems that insurmountable.

this is why i go pretty insane when i can't run, and why i always come back to it.

oh, and the moon was beautiful.

day 5: salty soup

so i almost ruined my crock pot chicken noodle soup by not adding enough salt this morning and adding too much when i got home...but i added some more water and i'm hoping that after it sits overnight it'll get over it. we'll see.

also i compulsively decided to take a hip hop (dance) class with julia. we're gonna start next monday or the monday after that. i'm pretty pumped. i know, it's hilarious, me and hip hop. but so was me and rowing, right?

i should've run today but somehow messed up my schedule and couldn't have gone until late...by which time iw as tired and unmotivated. but tomorrow's a new day.

day 4: why i love the shuffle setting on my ipod

went for a run this morning with emlar. it was an absolutely breath-taking morning and i'm so glad she pulled me out of bed to run this early. and by early i mean 10:30. which is not actually really early.

i had a great playlist from my ipod, which went like this:

love and happiness - al green
slide - goo goo dolls
troubled - land of talk
hallelujah - jeff buckley
light of love - music go music
dee - javelin
dawning - tamaryn
float on - modest mouse
teardrop (cover) - jose gonzalez
if she wants me - belle and sebastian

you know when it starts out with al green that it's gonna be so good. sooo good.

i'm still frustrated with how out of shape i feel. i mean, of course i do. i've barely been able to run over the last month. but it never ceases to surprise me how much of a difference a few weeks make. luckily, it seems that my muscles remember what it's like to be really strong. so they'll get there. and so will i.

day 3: best friends

the rest of yesterday was...a disaster. i mean, not entirely. but i ate too much, drank too much and didn't get a lot of sleep. it was fun, though! so i guess that's good.

today i'm really tired and the multiple life crises are kind of punching me in the face repeatedly. and this is a good reminder of why i'm doing this, why i'm trying to take good care of myself, because when i don't it wrecks my mood and my outlook.

luckily, i have these amazing friends who sat through lunch with me and made me laugh, gave me persepective and reminded me that i'm standing on solid ground. it's just that the wind is blowing really, really hard.

day 2: beautiful day off

i took the day off today and i can't tell you how gorgeous it is outside. i spent the morning reading by the window in the kitchen with an amazing cup of coffee, went to my voice lesson which was great despite my sore throat, went for a run followed by a nice walk, saw a beautiful apartment that is soon to be ours if we choose to take it and talked to my far-away best friend who i get to see tomorrow.

i should take fridays off more often...

day 1: sputter start

i'm having a lot of trouble with this motivation thing. life is still pretty much a whirlwind, although there are some signs of settling, and my energy's been pretty low for the last month and a half, plus the whole pulled muscle thing. bummer.

despite that, i got out of bed this morning at 5:45 and did yoga. i ate pretty well today (although yes, i did eat some food and drink a beer at happy hour but it was my coworker's send-off party what was i supposed to do) and i feel pretty good. little by little. like my mom says, i'm trying to take it hour by hour, day by day.

day 0: still later

...still sick. and today was pretty gross. but tomorrow, right? i always think that we make the right decisions when we're ready to.

i keep singing songs from susannah and trying to boost my motivation. bought headphones today. i'll test out the pulled muscle again tomorrow. actually tomorrow. it's happening.

thanks for your support. hoping the craziness ends soon so i can land on my feet and thank you all properly.

day 0: starting over a little later

sorry for the postponing. i woke up pretty sick this morning so my plans have changed a little. but mark my words: this will be up soon. and very soon.

day 0: starting over

well, it's been awhile.

i can't really comment this publicly on a lot of things going on right now, but suffice it to say that things are an absolute whirlwind. just when i was more on my feet than i've ever been, things changed completely.

oh, and i pulled a muscle in my groin. by running. which prevents me from running.

so i'm starting over.

tomorrow morning, a run, only a little longer than my muscle starts to ache again. tomorrow night, yoga. and in between, some healthy food.

tonight, though, i'm going to think about my commitment and crawl back under the covers. i don't know what i would be doing right now without my friends. for them i'm so, so grateful.

day 85: practicing gratitude

first of all, the stats from the last few days. (google reader people, i hear you can't see these, so hop on the real website if you want to see them! they're kind of awesome charts):

second of all:

on my run tonight, i just kept thinking about what a different person i am from the beginning of this summer. sure, i went crazy for at least a month or two, almost destroyed my body a little by pushing way too hard, didn't eat enough etc. etc., but i'm so proud of all that i've accomplished.

i don't know, maybe proud isn't the right word. maybe it's gratitude?

i can see my collarbones, i discovered that i have a dimple! one! on my left side, nothing on the right. which...i don't know if i just wasn't fit enough to notice it before or what but it's definitely new. i sleep better, i'm always eating better even when i'm eating horribly and amidst lots of stress and change i am cool as a cucumber because i feel so grounded.

i really and truly believe in the power of exercise to change people, to change the way we see ourselves, to edit in our minds the limitations we think we have, the problems we see ourselves needing to work on.

until now, exercise has been something that's been mostly bad for me. it's been obsessive, unrewarding, unrelenting and unforgiving. it's been the thing that makes a bad day worse, that perpetuates a bad self belief, that causes me to go even further inside myself when i don't feel like crawling out.

and this summer, yes, of course i had to get kind of obsessive about it and yes maybe i still am a little bit, but even if i'm not the fittest i've ever been, i'm definitely the healthiest i've ever been.

over and over and over this last month, i've been able to see so much goodness around me. my friends cheering me along, supporting me and one another even when it's difficult, my family coming together in ways i didn't expect. and at work, where things have been changing a lot, i've seen people go to bat for me again and again with the kind of confidence that i've never been able to recognize in others, let alone feel for myself.

tonight as my feet pounded the pavement, i was slow and dehydrated and hadn't given myself enough time to digest dinner, but i was so happy because it was time that i got to myself by myself, time to recognize all of the things that are blooming around me.

and all of the work i've put into this, all of the constant effort and trusting and asking and hoping, all of that energy was, i swear to god, only there because i was running again, because i saw myself getting faster and stronger in a way i never could at school because i wasn't actually allowing myself to train like people do. i was a slave driver to my body back then, and all i needed to do was give myself a break.

i just needed to keep running.

so i am. and i'll be running a 10k in a little over four weeks. so i'm going to try to keep up with the blogging, at least to post exercise. i think i might post what i eat, too, although i'm not sure i'll have time to count calories and all that again. at least not out loud?

thank you all for a wonderful, beautiful, happy summer. i promise i'll be less sappy next time. kthxbye.

day 78: i'm still alive!

just ridiculously busy, and this time not entirely or even mostly with exercise. which is good, i'm growing.

i'll update when i can!

day 75: thinking

i think i've decided not to blog about food until i have a little more time. i mean, i'm eating fairly well and not too much or too little, but i just don't want to take the time to write down the nutritional value and all that right now. that's fair, right?

in other news, i'm about to get into my third week of training. god i love running.

Sunday, August 7, 2011

day 74: running buddies

so i'm signed up for a 10k in mid-september and a half marathon at the end of october. last night, i went on a run with katelyn, one of my best friends from college that i haven't gotten to see much over the last year. it was wonderful. we decided to run together more often now that she lives up here. SO pumped.

i will start blogging about food again tomorrow, or will try. we'll see how far i get. trying to find a balance in life again between work, exercise, eating/cooking and friends. oh, and alone time when i do nothing. i need a lot more of that lately.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

day 70: still doing it

okay. so i'm giving myself until sunday (post grocery shopping...?) to start blogging about food.

meanwhile, i rowed this morning with my HRM. but then i left it at work...and thus didn't use it for the interval run/warm-up/core exercises i just did. oh well.

one of these days i'm going to try to write some more. but i'm basically feeling pretty good, feeling actually just more like myself than i have in a couple weeks, and i'm remembering why i love running so much.

in the meantime, if any of ya'll have suggestions on running music, do tell.

day 69: 10k training begins again

okay, guys. i'm like, way too lazy to blog about food today or to write the long post i wrote in my head while running. but the deal is that i'm back in full force and loving, loving, loving it.

day 68: i'm back!

yes, i'm counting from where i left off, because i feel like these last couple of weeks haven't really counted. but it's time to get back on track and start focusing again.

1) i'm selling my bike. i think i posted a little about this, but basically my bike is a pain and needs to be adjusted every five minutes, and it's not worth the time or money to me this summer. i'm going to use part of next year's tax return (whoo miranda!) to buy myself a bike. and in the meantime it's okay, because i'm outside lots anyway.

2) i just got back from the boundary waters, a national wilderness area bordering minnesota and canada. it was incredible. i camped out with two lovely friends i didn't know that well before the trip, and i'm so, so glad i went. i really, truly unplugged and i'm so grateful for that, and to be glad to be back home.

3) i'm going to try and add in some strength moves for running! i have an "active warm-up" to do before each run, and after if i have time, an all-over workout to do twice a week and a core workout to do three times a week.

4) this week commences training for my second 10k! whoo! i haven't run in almost two weeks, though, which is terrifying. i'm going to get back into it by jumping in with a 20-30 minute easy run tomorrow evening. i'm pretty excited.

5) i'm starting to grocery shop way differently, and i'm going to try to cook more efficiently, and to make sure that cooking is always enjoyable and never truly stressful. i'm pretty excited.

6) i'm feeling generally really wonderful and grateful for all of the love i'm constantly surrounded by. thanks for being awesome, people.

see you tomorrow.

day 67: rowing

it rained today, which meant not getting out on the water, which sucked. instead, we did a bootcamp workout and a bunch of stuff on the ergs (the stationary machines that you see in gyms). it was awesome and i'm excited to be sore tomorrow.

i'm feeling good about the prospect of feeling on track again. i haven't been eating all that well and i'm noticing a significant drop in my energy, which normally happens every few months. it's extreme, though! i usually limit myself to a cup of coffee a day and i've had about four since 6:30pm and am drop dead exhausted now, six hours after the first cup and almost three after the fourth. i feel like that's not that normal? but oh well.

in any case, i'm gonna get back on it as soon as i can. srsly. it's happening.

day 66: i couldn't stay away, i couldn't fight it

i just registered for a 10k (running with egluck) on september 17 and a half marathon on october 29.

i'm gonna have to figure out a plan to focus on this running thing. i might have to drop biking, which i think i'm okay with since it turns out my bike sucks. i'm looking into whether i want to do this.

in other words, i SCULLED last night! (rowed with two oars.) in a "double," a boat with one other person and it happened to be someone on the the team that i really love rowing with. WONDERFUL. best rowing experience yet, probably. i can't wait to do an early morning practice with sculling...

speaking of which i have rowing at 9. thank god they changed it from 8. but i have to cox, which means zero workout. not excited.

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

day 64: giving myself permission

so, i haven't written in what feels like 18 years. i was really busy, and then i was at liz's cabin with the three best friends. totally worth it. also, the heat index here has been between 111-116 degrees for a few days.

although i've kept up rowing and i even went on a 75 minute run in the heat on sunday, i feel like i'm falling out of shape! and i feel like i'm not being nearly as conscious of what i'm eating. but a week from yesterday, i'm leaving for the boundary waters for five days. and until then i'm losing every ounce of work-life balance i have going for me.

while i very strongly believe in keeping a consistent exercise routine, i don't think i can uphold my running schedule perfectly over the next week and a half. when i get back from the boundary waters, i plan to jump back on the blogging train and start keeping track of exercise/food again.

but until then, i'm giving myself permission to take a 12-day break. and i'll be back on august 1.

i'd love to hear all of your thoughts on this! advice? words of encouragement? eh? EH?

day 59: restored, maybe

my work day today was a reminder of why i work where i do. what a great day. what a great reward for working so hard.

i feel like i'm falling off the wagon a little bit again with this blog and with the whole concept of it. and i'd love, love, love your encouragement to keep writing, to keep running, rowing, biking and living like i want to live.

on sunday, i'm going up to liz's cabin with emily and laura and i cannot wait. the four of us haven't been together in almost exactly a year, and GAH i can't explain how much i miss it!

then, in a couple of weekends, i'm going on a boundary waters trip with another friend. i'm SO EXCITED! i'm so, so grateful that she invited me and i can't wait to tell you all about it. i've never been and it's going to be a great way to use some PTO and to take a really good breather from the world. seriously.

i'm posting my exercise for the day, but i don't have the energy to go back and finish my food blog from yesterday or to write out the one from today. i've stayed about within my calorie limits, but maybe haven't balanced things as nicely as i hope to one day....??

anyway, again. i would really, really appreciate the help.

oh, and THANK YOU RACHEL for inspiring me to go running at 10pm on a friday. i really, really needed it and it was a great run. so thanks.

day 58: blergh two

how was my last long weekend only a week and a half ago?

this is another day at work where i've had enough stress, at 1pm, to last me through years. so i'm taking a break to re-center myself. i work really well under pressure, but not well at all when frazzled.

i didn't bike in this morning because i was feeling really tired last night and because i didn't get around to buying grease for my bike chain. i feel like it's okay, though.

here's what i'm establishing for my goals. if i achieve all of them in any given week, i am staying in shape:

a) a net of around 1,700-1,800 calories a day
b) bike to work once
c) do all of the running workouts according to my half-marathon plan (usually 3-4 days)
d) row twice
e) 8 hours of sleep most nights

it's going to take a little convincing to feel like this is actually real. i'm pretty hard on myself, if you haven't noticed, and i feel like i'm failing this week even though i've already rowed twice, run once and biked in once. and i've been trying to listen to my body, which is obviously not pleased lately.

why am i so nauseated this morning!? oh yeah, probably all the stress.

day 57: blergh

i'm stressed today. because:

a) last night, i fell asleep after my last blog update (around 7:30pm) and didn't wake up until 5am. i still have a headache. i feel like this is a glasses issue.

b) i'm feeling a little bit broke from rowing and other things, and last night i found out my bike is a piece of crap. surprise surprise! i should probably invest in a new one. maybe i'll ride this one out for the season and buy a new one next year? it's squealy, one of the brakes on the front wheel is picky, and the bike people did all they could for free. i feel like i need to buy a bike from them...they're friends of the guy at the first place, but they rebuild their bikes from scratch. anyway, don't exactly have the money for it at the moment...but also don't want to stop riding.

c) work.

d) that nausea thing. that's concerning.

e) did i mention the glasses thing? i used to have reading glasses when this happened before, and i had to get them because i had 20/20 but weak eyes, which means they get tired. how pathetic.

f) i have to eat a lot to make up for not eating at all yesterday evening.

but you know what? i'm putting on a happy face, or trying to. i discovered gojee.com which has gotten me through the periods of my brain feeling like it's going to break today. go check it out! it's the coolest thing ever. you can put in what ingredients you have around the house and what you want and it will spit out recipes that use some/all of them and include stuff you're craving. perfection. especially when i'm feeling broke.

and i'm going to go for a run when i get home, and it's going to be lovely.

day 56: this headache thing is becoming a problem

as in, my skull might actually explode. right now. onto this keyboard and monitor. and onto my boss. oopsies.

so, due to the sewing fiasco last night, i have to run tonight. i also biked to work today and (obviously) have yet to bike home. i think i'm out of biking shape, or at least biking-to-work shape, as miranda called it today. which makes me sound better, so i like it.

why do i feel so out of shape lately!? i've been getting more sleep this week, or at least thinking about getting more sleep, so that's probably a good thing, but the actual sleep thing should also happen. i'm guessing that i'll get home tonight by 7, rest (i.e. cook) until 7:30, run until 8:30, eat and hop into bed. and then wake up for rowing tomorrow. whoo! if i have to row bow again, though, i'm tipping that boat over. watch me.

**update**
at the beginning of my ride home, i got super nauseated and have been ever since. i'm adequately hydrated, it's not unreasonably hot and i've eaten a lot already today. what is the deal!? if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. for tonight, it means i'm not running (i don't think i can/should), and i'm annoyed. really annoyed.

day 55: i'm back! and sleeping.

hello, friends! it feels like 100 days since i've written. so let's get back on track here.

(and by let's, i mean, i will.)

i made a schedule for myself this week. it involves something that's very new to me: sleep! last night was a minor catastrophe since i was still cooking (poor planning) when i was supposed to be in bed and then couldn't fall asleep, but i'm confident that some melatonin will do the trick tonight. plus a really long day.

my weekend was lovely and involved a minor-major hermitage for a day and a half. and by hermitage i mean i barely left the apartment, besides the 10k, my voice lesson and an apartment viewing. but yesterday i left for almost the whole day, went to the farmer's market, got sunburned at the beach with friends (yay raccoon eyes) and went to happy hour. wonderful. even though it was probably awful for my waistline, but whatever! i biked there!

rowing this morning was really wonderful, despite rowing bow. i hate rowing bow because it feels like bow seat gets the brunt of any unbalancing of the boat which, in novice, happens constantly. so either my oar was 6 feet under the water or 10 feet above it (this is a gross exaggeration, of course). but i started to get better at feathering, did some backing (rowing backwards to help turn the boat where you push the oar...perfection) and wore my heart rate monitor, which was great except that i forgot to turn off the running setting...so it didn't really track my activity all that well. my bad.

also, i'm trying to eat more regularly this week. which means i spent too much money on food, by about $15. bummer. but what are you gonna do when you have to eat a bazillion calories a day. (weird, the webform didn't say "bazillion" wasn't a word....)

**update**
realized i had a sewing class i thought i'd never signed up for and just put in my calendar...so i went this evening and it was really fun! but as a consequence i didn't cook real dinner for the week, and i'm pushing my run to tomorrow (which would otherwise be an "off" day). this making sleep a priority thing is confusing.

food (cal, fat, protein, carbohydrates, s)

4 tbsp salsa: 20c, 0f, 0p, 4b, 0s
2 hardboiled eggs: 125c, 8f, 12p, 0b, 0s
greek yogurt: 150c, 0f, 14p, 22b, 21s

day 53: my first 10k

56:20. it was posted as 56:25 but that's only because the girl in front of me started walking between the timer and the women who were taking the tabs off our numbers (to determine our time). so, definitely not what i wanted to do, but also not terrible. i think i was just kind of aiming high.

as for eating today, it's going to be more carbs! yay! and i'm probably going to sort of eat what i want, within reason. so...pretty much what you're not supposed to do. i will get back on track.

in other news i've planned out my meals for the week and i'm feeling pretty good about them so far. although it was a pain to try and find a good fat/protein/carb balance, as i suspected..

Friday, July 8, 2011

day 52: i'm going to kick some serious butt tomorrow

i didn't bike in today because the 10k is tomorrow!

also because i got a little bit of heat exhaustion last night. at least that's what i think it was? i need to start carrying coconut water in addition to normal water with me. it has a lot of electrolytes and a ridiculous amount of potassium = perfect refueler. even though i think it's disgusting. seriously disgusting.

[anyone wanna buy me a fuel belt!?]

yeah, so last night. i got home, was starving and didn't have much food in the house, so i started to look up a recipe and fell asleep on the couch. two hours later, i woke up, realized the co-op was closing soon and i needed to get some food in my body. but i was really nauseated and had to coax myself up and out the door. as soon as i had some coconut water (and yes, i drank a bunch of normal water before that), i felt way better. and then eating. but i forget how hard it is to ingest that many calories. it's probably not a good thing that i ate a whole container of frozen yogurt (with live active cultures!) as part of that, but whatever. at least it was yogurt and not ice cream? and you try eating 3,200 calories of decently healthy food a day! it's tough.

also, i decided i'm going to start making my life harder by trying to track the percentage of calories that come from fat, protein and carbs. this is going to take a lot of time, but i'm going to try it at least for a month. after that, hopefully i'll start to learn how to eat like an athlete. maybe by then i'll be one!

according to a bunch of websites for runners, i should be getting 60% of my calories from carbohydrates (less than 10% from simple carbs like sugar, honey, fruit and dairy products. one easy, and thus slightly inaccurate, way of calculating this is to take the total number of carbohydrates and subtract the amount of sugar to get the amount of complex carbs in something). i should then get 25% of my calories from fat (this is usually listed on the label) and 15% from protein. grams of carbs and protein contain about 4 calories each, and each gram of fat has about 9 calories. this is going to be a lot of work.

day 51: sense of smell

this morning, i rode in (biked) to work for the first time in...what, a week and a half? seems like longer than that. anyway. i was listening to podcasts of the splendid table and re-listened to one from about a year ago about a woman that lost her sense of smell. which equals losing her sense of taste. which equals losing the kind of smell memory that means that the scent of ink remind me of going to the printer with my mom when i was little and buying chiclets from the machine, or the kind that makes me think of saturday nights with my dad and a prairie home companion every time i smell pasta and wine together. sad. so today i'm grateful for my sense of smell, even when it makes riding by 8 billion garbage trucks a smidge unbearable.

also i'm hating myself a little for feeling pretty broke. i bought a bike, signed up for rowing (twice) and bought clothes all at the same time and now i'm suffering for it. which made buying food last night especially saddening since i still haven't gone grocery shopping. it was 10pm. i bought frozen food and some produce because i was exhausted. worth it? probably. plus burritos are an easy way to get some decent calories in your body fast. true fact.

food
1c grape juice: 160c, 0p, 0f
breakfast burrito: 250c, 9p, 5f
chicken rice thing: 350c, 17p, 2f
southwestern burrito: 300c, 12p, 6f
two peaches: 140c, 4p, 6f
coconut water: 75c, 1p, 0.5f
mushroom tortelloni: 600c, 20p, 4f
2c cherries: 170c, 2p, 6f
frozen yogurt: 720c, 28p, 0f
1 c chocolate milk: 150c, 9p, 1f

=2915c, 104p, 30.5f

exercise

(i've been googling around to figure out if this is actually a real number of calories burned and turns out it's apparently pretty close. weird. i've been underestimating by a lot, which reinforces that starvation mode thing.)

day 50: unburdened hooks

so, today is one of those days where i feel like spilling all of my woes into this webform just to put them out there. but i will spare you the drama and just say this is a day. and maybe it's because my family left today, maybe it's because i definitely didn't get enough sleep, maybe it's because it's my first day back at work after the holiday weekend? who knows.

this weekend, i pretty much stuck to my exercise schedule (okay, minus yesterday), but i didn't eat all that well. which, whatever. it was a holiday weekend.

but i know that it's time to get back on track.

i'm annoyed with myself for not going grocery shopping this weekend. i'm going to have to go out for lunch today. which i hate doing because it's a pain, it's never what i want it to be and it's usually too hot/too caloric to be good for my body.

good thing i'm not whiny or anything.

**update**

I AM IN LOVE with my heart rate monitor. seriously. look at the second exercise thing down there. awesome.

food
breakfast burrito: 610c, 27p, 3f
banana: 135c, 2p, 4f
veggie sandwich on wheat: 675c, 23.5p, 6.5f
chips: 125c, 2p, 1.5f
2 tbsp artichoke dip: 80c, 1p, 0f
honey weiss: 150c, 1p, 0f
potato/pea wrap: 250c, 8p, 4f
spinach/tofu wrpa: 270c, 10p, 6f
gelato: 260c, 5p, 2f

=2555c, 79.5p, 27f

exercise
rowing. no idea how many calories since my HRM won't come until this afternoon. um, 200? 300 tops? let's say 200.
=620c burned

net: 1935c. a little high, but not bad.

grateful
my heart rate monitor is coming today. and more importantly i had a lovely visit with my mom and bro. i'm gonna miss having them around...
it was a beautiful day and i got to spend it with wonderful people. so grateful.

day 47: omgomgomgomgomgomgomg

i officially am skinnier than i've been since sophomore year (which, by the way, was three years ago). i keep going back to the scale assuming it's a fluke. but turns out it's a REAL NUMBER.

aslkdfjl;askjdflakdfj!!!!!!!!!!

i can't believe that all i had to do was work a little less hard to earn this. i mean, keep up the exercise and just eat more. rachel (my roommate) said that to me about 20 years ago but i was skeptical. i was even skeptical when i tried it, but oh my goodness is it working for me. i'm going to have to continually adjust but holy jeez. so, turns out i actually lost two pounds this week, which is about the max for healthy/sustainable weight loss. i'm so freaking excited.

ALSO that my family is going to be here in two hours!!! whooo!!!! yay mom and brother!!!

day 46: rip van winkle

i slept somewhere around 15 hours (on and off) last night. guess i needed it?

i think i might skip the calorie counting for today. i'm planning on being outside a lot and i don't really want to commit to posting before bed. so, onward to tomorrow! and i'll try not to eat too much today.

in other news, I LOST ANOTHER POUND! whoooooo!! so we'll keep my net around 1,700 for another week or so, then drop back down to 1,500 and see which my body likes better.

so excited.

sleep
um...probably a total of 15 hours? (yikes.)

day 45: uh oh

i got my bike fixed last night. and then we rowed an awesome race against another boat that had men (THREE OF THEM!) and two more experienced rowers (BOTH OF THEM MEN!)....so we lost. but only by a small margin!

i got home, miscalculated my calories, ate too much and fell asleep.

[THIS PART IS GROSS!]

woke up at 5:15, drank some juice, got ready to go biking, sat down, got hit by a wave of nausea and vomited out every ounce of juice/water in my body.

ew.

[GROSSNESS OVER.]

needless to say, i went back to bed and drove in instead. i think i was just hot and dehydrated and exhausted. which, that's fair. but i'm still annoyed that i didn't bike in today. i'm exhausted and pretty useless. my brain is like old celery.

i'm taking this as a sign that i should take the day off of exercise. i should probably be doing that more often, and i will as soon as i run this 10k (8 days!)...i'll give myself an easy week and then start training for a half marathon. it's gonna be great! and i'll have my new HRM.

i'll be honest. i'm half dead. and as soon as i go outside and back to my hot apartment, i might be deader. or less dead. i'm not sure yet.

food
french toast: 330c, 12p, 1.5f
ants on a log: 145c, 4p, 3f
teriyaki chicken and noodles (half): 425c, 12.5p, 3f

sleep

day 44: everything is breaking!!!

friedrich (bike) is broken again. have i mentioned that? yes. it should just be a small adjustment but i adjusted it for an hour last night and couldn't get it to work. basically, my easy gears are out of commission, which means i can definitely ride around the neighborhood, but biking to work is basically out of the question. about a quarter of my ride home is giant hills that are impossible with easy gears, let alone the highest five. and i was going to take my bike in yesterday, but called the guy and he explained how to make the adjustment (which i think i'd figured out before) but it's not working and the top of the screw is all worn off and i don't think it would fix the problem anyway....and i'm so frustrated! i just want to ride my bike around like i was before.

okay. rant over. for now.

----(update)
taking my bike in after work before rowing. we're competing today against the other learn to row team! whoo! and then i join the novice team and practice before work and on saturdays.

also, my new heart rate monitor should be here tomorrow, although the foot pod that comes with it (measures speed/distance etc.) won't be here until after the fourth. my heart is broken but it's fine.

ice cream cake at work for my coworker's last day. it was delicious but way too much. i should've asked for a smaller piece....i forget that i can't actually eat a decent amount of ice cream without feeling sick to my stomach. that's gonna be awesome during rowing.

**update**
i will write all about rowing tomorrow. it was awesome. but then i got home and was starving and calculated my calories wrong and forgot the cider and juice box i had tonight and now i'm over by too many calories. plus i ate my dinner so quickly that i feel all sick and disgusting and too full. but it's fine because i'm biking to work tomorrow. yay.

food
french toast: 330c, 12p, 1.5f
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ice cream cake: 370c, 7p, 1f
crispin: 170c, 0p, 0f
juicebox ("medal" for graduating from rowing): 100c, 0p, 0f
teriyaki chicken and noodles (whole): 850c, 25p, 6f

= 2355c, 57.5p, 10f
AHHH!!!! and not even good protein/fiber intake.

exercise
rowing, racing(!) two hours-ish, some of it not rowing? so i'm estimating 400c? i'm assuming that's slightly low but i have no idea, let's be honest.

net: 1955c. well, guess i'm really gonna have to work it tomorrow.

sleep (last night)
6 hours

grateful
my bike will be fixed soon. and i'm excited to ride again!
sleep is gonna feel so great. i'm starting to learn just how little i get...scary.
i'm not going to get a lot of sleep tonight, turns out. but my bike is fixed!!

day 43: a change in plans

(part a: work is SO STRESSFUL lately! meaning i have to take more, shorter breaks during the day to keep my brain screwed on straight. thank god for exercise.)

i've decided to change a few things: goals for my blog, my calorie intake, my weekly plan and maybe my blog structure.

here are the things:

goals
when i started this blog, i wanted to do a lot. i wanted to record my calories and exercise, blog regularly, but also try new things, be outside a lot and be more mindful. and i am trying new things and i am being more mindful, but i'm going to release myself of the responsibility to try to blog about those daily, because let's face it, it's not going to happen. and those things are happening organically out of my other goals, anyway. how many hours upon hours have i spent outside already this summer? (as evidenced by my rockin' tan...yeah i need to get on that higher spf thing.) i've decided, then, to focus on food and exercise logs, reflections and getting enough sleep! maybe for awhile i'll log how much sleep i get, too. that seems like motivation..

calorie intake
i'm going to increase it again. it seems i lost weight when i was eating more, so we're going to try 1,700 calories for a few weeks and see how it goes. if my body responds well, i'll keep it up. if i don't lose any additional weight, i'll drop back down to 1,500.

weekly plan
i need to focus on running, but i also want to take advantage of the beautiful weather and row/bike as often as i can. my rule is that i'm not going to do all three in a day ever (at least not when i'm biking to work), since the last time i did that i 100% died. so my goal is to row 2+ times a week, bike to work 2+ times a week, and run 4+ days a week. i think that's usually going to mean rowing on monday and wednesday (saturday as a back-up) and biking to work on tuesday and thursday. my rest day will be friday which is great since i hate working out on fridays anyway.

no matter what happens, i am going to follow my running plan. that means not biking to work when i feel like i'm going to be exhausted, that means running also comes before rowing. my training plan for the half marathon (which i'm going to start training for after the 10k) asks me to run 4-5 times a week, so i'll adjust based on what it says. but that's 500% manageable.

blog structure
i'm going to make a real effort to write a little more, to record the things i'm thinking about food/exercise as i go through this process. hopefully it'll make my blog more fun to read! (although i know you're all on the edge of your seats as it is.)

please comment!! my mom just did :)

**update**
this afternoon i spent about ten minutes on the phone with the bike shop and the guy taught me how to repair my bike with an easy fix. or, rather, adjust. so i spent an hour on it tonight, pedaling around and trying everything and i still can't fix it. so i'm going to have to take it in. maybe tomorrow during lunch? i'm frustrated and i miss biking so much that after i realized i couldn't fix it, i still rode around for another ten-ish minutes because it was so nice to be back on my schwinnbaby.

food
everything bagel (free at work again! meaning i don't have to buy extra breakfast stuff this week. yay. also, i think bagels are actually decent for breakfast when you're exercising a lot. i mean, i definitely should supplement with some produce, but whatever): 300c, 10p, 2f
1 tbsp cream cheese: 50c, 1p, 0f
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ants on a log: 145c, 4p, 3f
teriyaki chicken and noodles (half): 425c, 12.5p, 3f
1c tomato juice: 50c, 2p, 2f
1c grape juice: 160c, 0p, 0f
1c chocolate milk:  180c, 8p, 0f
1 piece strawberry cake: 363c, 4.5p, 0.5f

=2208c, 57.5p, 14f

still low on fiber. i'm going to have to really work on that when i grocery shop for next week.

exercise
interval workout with 4 4-min intervals. somewhere around 420c.

net: 1788c. pretty close to my new goal. let's see what happens.

sleep (last night)
7.25 hours

grateful
for a new direction.
for how handy i'm going to feel when i get this bike fixed! (with the help of the shop guy...)

day 42: reel it back in

i feel like i've fallen off the wagon a little. and i'm going to attempt to climb back on it. i didn't count calories very closely this weekend (although i'm 90% sure that i stayed well within my limits), and ate too much yesterday. meanwhile, exercise feels a little erratic. i'm annoyed that my heart rate monitor is once again broken and annoyed that my bike is again giving me problems. somehow, i have to go get it fixed before i ride into work on thursday...and i'm only riding into work twice this week (yet again), which makes me feel like a failure. aghhhh. i'm trying to really focus on that sleep thing. hoping it will help me climb back on.

---later
so, i almost skipped my run. and then i was like, you know what? it's half an hour. this is easy. i can do this. and i went and it was wonderful. so grateful for feeling fit again.

food
egg bagel: 310c, 11p, 4f
1 tbsp cream cheese: 50c, 1p, 0f
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ants on a log: 145c, 4p, 3f
1 piece strawberry cake: 363c, 4.5p, 0.5f
 shakshuka without a pita: 285c, 11.5p, 1.5f
1c chocolate milk:  180c, 8p, 0f
1 piece strawberry cake: 363c, 4.5p, 0.5f

=2231c, 58p, 11f

proof that i need to eat more fruits and vegetables: LOOK AT HOW LITTLE FIBER THAT IS. ongoing goal. the problem is that vegetables don't give you a lot of calories quickly. which is usually a good thing but is lately a bad thing.

exercise
about 3.6 miles in 32 min (@6.8mph) = 420c
for rowing, i sat in the launch for half of practice, so i'm going to estimate, based on the 2k sprint we did beforehand and the forty-five minutes-ish of rowing that i did...this is a low estimate = 250c

burned: 670c

net: 1561c

grateful
for a refocused vision..and super excited for rowing tonight! (and to get my bike fixed tomorrow.)
that i wore spandex today at rowing and didn't even worry about my thighs jiggling. victory.

day 41: why do i do this to myself?

i got about five hours of sleep last night, minus the hour that i was awake in the middle of the night and could not fall back asleep. what is that about? probably eating and exercising too late. and yes, i stayed up too late making risotto for this week's lunches. because i took a really long nap yesterday and didn't go grocery shopping at a responsible time. i am cruel to my body.

update-----
i'm feeling a little bit like a failure because i've decided not to bike to work tomorrow. i'm going to bed, i'm going to sleep a full night and i'm going to get my bike fixed before i attempt to take it over the hills in st. paul. i think these are legit reasons and i'm rowing and running tomorrow but i'm still not feeling great about it...

food
french toast: 330c, 12p, 1.5f
1 tbsp frosting (i kept testing it for the cake i finished this morning): 50c
asparagus and mushroom risotto: 535c, 13.5p, 1.5f
ants on a log (6 pieces celery, 2 tbsp raisins, 1 tbsp pb): 145c, 4p, 3f
too many crackers: 280c, 0p, 0f
1/2 lb peel and eat shrimp with cocktail sauce (yum): 330c, 36.5p, 4f
gorgonzola bread: 350c, 6p, 0f
mojito: 200c, 0p, 0f

totals: 2220c, 72p, 10f

yeah, turns out i ate too much. i guess that's okay every once in awhile, but i feel kind of weird about it since i didn't closely count calories this weekend. also: way too many carbs.

exercise
scheduled day off.

day 40: holy. jeez.

you guys, i ate like crap today. i mean, not in that i ate too many calories or too much fat...just that i had a kind of junk food-y day. and although i'm going to end up with the same calorie net that i'd like (i mean, i'm estimating), i still feel less than phenomenal.

that's both the frustrating part and the awesome part.

i ran my run today at 7.4mph. sure, i didn't make the whole four miles (quite), but it wasn't because i was tired. it was because i was mean to my tummy and didn't hydrate well enough. but i definitely had at least another mile in me, if not two or three (minus the painful stomach/side cramps from my body being pissed about that whole salt/carbs-only thing). holy. crap. i'm so excited!!! that's like, almost 8 min miles. asdflaksjdf;lkasdfa;lsfdkja;sdkfj!!!!!!!!!!!!

exercise
about 3.7 miles at 7.4mph = 440 calories.

BAM.

...yeah i'm totally not going back and trying to figure out how many calories i consumed today. which i'm fine with. it's been a pretty decent weekend.

Saturday, June 25, 2011

day 39: this has to be a fluke

i weighed myself this morning, after staying out late drinking/eating, which usually pushes my weight up. but i woke up this morning and weighed myself and i lost another 1.4 pounds!!! i weighed myself again about half an hour later and it was the same...but i'm convinced that this can't be an actual number. i've also apparently lost about an inch off my waist? which probably just means my ab muscles are finally kicking in...i hope this actually is a real thing and not just a weird scale day or something...

because if i lost that, that puts my weight loss total at about 4.6 lbs, or, more realistically (since i didn't actually give myself a definitive weight to start from), 2.6 lbs. which, that's not awesome for 39 days (5.5 weeks), but it's also not the worst thing that's ever happened.

in other news my heart rate monitor is not working! argh!! more on that later...time for bootcamp and rowing.

food
2c chocolate milk: 360c, 16p, 0f
bean burrito: 410c, 14p, 5f
french toast: 330c, 12p, 1.5f

totals:  1100c, 42p, 6.5f

exercise
rowing/boot camp. my hrm, as i mentioned, is not working...and boot camp was hard today, soo let's call it 500c.

update: i decided not to go back and analyze what i ate for the rest of the day. i was estimating in my head and think i hit about a net of 1500c....i'll go back to calorie counting this week, but am too lazy to do so now. but omg. read the next post.

day 38: these jeans are sorta big

yesterday, i took a break. yes, i went to rowing, but i skipped my bike ride to/from work and skipped my (15-minute easy) run. i was exhausted. and i feel like it's okay that i missed a significant amount of my plan for yesterday, because sometimes i just need a break. and boot camp (pre-rowing) involved sprints, so that's running, right?

in other news, the jeans i'm wearing are sort of loose. whether they're stretched out or i'm getting thinner is debatable, but my tape measure isn't saying much and tape measures don't lie. (unless you're retaining water, are dehydrated etc etc etc.)

but i'm still not losing weight, people. i look slightly better, and i feel a lot better and those are both great things. but i still wish i could just look like i work out as much as i do, like i'm in as good of shape as i am...i'm hoping to go see my doctor sometime next week (i'm due for a check-in after we found out my vitamin d was still severely low, even with an insane amount of supplements) and i'm going to bring him my food/exercise log so he can tell me what i'm doing wrong. (sleep is probably a part of it.)

also, i 100% killed two of my cuticles rowing yesterday. we're not good at balancing the (very thin, long) boat yet, and i was sitting in the bow seat, which means (i think) that i was especially affected. i kept pushing the oar down as far as it would go to get it out of the water, but it wouldn't work, and the boat would rock and my hand would be smashed against the gunnel (rim of the boat) and my hand was a little bloody by the end of it. i'm excited to row stern on saturday and to suck less at rowing...for some reason egluck and i both felt pretty awful about how we rowed yesterday while everyone else seemed mostly pleased..?

one of my favorite people in our class has a brother-in-law who's a cop. she was saying yesterday that when she told him she was going to row in the river, he told her a bunch of horror stories about people jumping off the tall bridges into the water in an attempt to commit suicide. apparently, in one spot, they get sucked down into the muck that comprises the bottom half of the river and suffocate/drown that way. in another spot, you float over a dam and hit a wood chopper. one poor man jumped and went over the dam and lived, with only a broken arm. she said that in the spring, when the water thaws, bodies turn up. i thought of the seinfeld episode where kramer is swimming in the river and he says, "there are a bunch of guys out there!" not realizing that they're dead bodies.

how picturesque.

also, if you need tips on how to be a more interesting person, read this. too funny. (i'm 100% doing the potato thing...because i didn't start it before i read this article...cough.)

another update. i'm exhausted still. exhausted. i'm so unmotivated to run this afternoon that the thought of it is killing me a little. should i still go? if so, please leave me some words of motivation. thanks. <3

food (my net calorie intake needs to be 2,155 today...i still haven't made up my deficit)
1c chocolate milk: 180c, 8p, 0f
greek yogurt: 140c, 14p, 0f
pork and peaches: 235c, 26p, 1f
couscous: 175c, 6p, 2f
1/2c strawberries: 25c, 0.5p, 1.5f
bean dip: 89c, 4p, 3f
chips: 140c, 2p, 2f
17 reese's pieces (yes, i counted): 68c, 1.5p
french toast: 332c, 12p, 1.5f
cheese and crackers: 360c, 16p, 2f
two drinks: 420c, 0p, 0f
4 jalapeno poppers: 400c, 10p, 2f

totals:  2564c, 100p, 15f

day 37: hitting a wall

i was way too exhausted this morning to wake up, and decided not to bike to work. i felt like a little bit of a failure, but i haven't been doing a good job of sleeping and taking care of my other life needs. so that has to change.

i got coffee this morning with a lovely coworker, which was much needed, after staying up late with emlar debriefing the last four years of life. i could barely get out of bed this morning and have been only slightly awake since i got to work.

my net intake today should be 2,120 to even out the last two days. must. happen.

food
1c chocolate milk: 180c, 8p, 0f
1 mint mocha with soy: 373c, 10p, 5f
bean burrito: 411c, 14p, 5f

exercise
my hrm was having a hard time yesterday and decided to shut itself off. after saying that my resting heart rate was 30 bpm. which, i'm in shape but not that in shape. so, let's just estimate 1 hr @ 123 bpm = 420c

grateful
for going out to coffee for my first meeting today
for how gorgeous the river is, even with its filth and even in a strong current

day 36: catching up

so, i didn't eat enough yesterday. by about 1,300 calories. equals my net intake should be 2,800 calories today.  i am overwhelmed. luckily, i brought a carton of raspberries with me to work. bye, 6 oz of deliciousness. ALSO we have a lunch thing today where staff members are bringing caloric foods. i wish i could say i knew all my extra calories were coming from apples.

um, but rowing. so, i got there at 5:45 exhausted from running, biking to work and biking to the river on not enough sleep. and then we did some circuit training which involved planks, all kinds of lunges, weighted crunches, squat jumps, wall sits and other hell. it was actually mostly invigorating, even though squat jumps were not happening on my way-too-fatigued quads.

we got out on the water, figured out some tricks (this was our first time in the skinny "8" boat) for balancing, and rowed away. as the sun set. and it was so peaceful and beautiful and for the first time all day, i felt really happy and was beaming. even when we almost tipped over (constantly), when the mosquitoes started to come out...it was so, so wonderful. part of me thinks that rowing will be my savior.

egluck graciously drove me to her apartment where we were meeting our friends. i ate, but was barely present because i was so tired and on over-drive. but i went to bed at a (fairly) decent hour and read and slept well..minus the loud drunk people who decided it was cool to be yelling on the street (a residential street) at 3am on a TUESDAY NIGHT. not that i'm bitter.

day 35: 5am run

so, i'm having a day. but this blog is not about my failures at life. it's about my successes at health. cough.

i have never been as happy to be at work as i am today. ever. and probably never again. holy. jeez.

it's mornings like this morning that remind me of this: i'm not actually an athlete. i'm in decent shape, but that doesn't mean i can run and bike and row all in one day. oops.

new resolution: i'm going to avoid running more than 20 minutes before commuting to work by bike. AND i'm not, not biking tomorrow. it's only going to be two days this week because i need to run intervals tomorrow. and if i say otherwise, i want you to embarrass and harass me publicly.

mama's tired. she may or may not have hit muscle failure on the last hill this morning. owww.

blueberry pomegranate juice: 200c, 0p, 0f

biking to work, the most excruciating ride of my life, 80 min, 142bpm=767c
biking to rowing, 65 min, 126bpm = 511 calories
rowing (under-estimating based on an average)= 340c

total burned: 2080c

net: 216c. which means that i need to eat another 1,300. which i'm choosing to do tomorrow because i'm too tired to stay awake..

thankful
for my body, which actually woke up and went for a run at 5am. that hardly ever happens in the morning.
for miranda, who rode at a decent pace this morning so i felt sluggish and awkward if i didn't try to keep up.
for this second cup of coffee.
for rowing on the mississippi at sunset and realizing that i'm smiling for the first time all day.

day 34: no more exercise!

but seriously. my goal for the day is to not exercise. to give my body a freaking break. it needs one.

also, i lost 0.6 lb last week, which is an improvement. this week, i'm shooting for a net calorie intake of 1,700 to see what happens. i have a feeling i'll have to play around with this for awhile until i figure out wtf my body wants.

food
strawberry-stuffed french toast: 332c, 12p, 1.5f
double-bean burrito: 411c, 14.35p, 5.2f

whoo! ready for the triathlon that's happening tomorrow. (yay biking, running and rowing in one day. ugh.)

things i'm grateful for
that now i have to tell myself not to exercise, and that's more of a struggle than getting moving.
the way sleep feels when you're exhausted.
the free milk crate miranda got me for my bike! and liz's advice on how to attach it more securely...with pounds of string...

day 33: calorie injection

i'm going to try to step up the fruits and vegetables this week, since i felt kind of unhealthy last week. we'll see how that goes.

my dad and i have had a lovely time together (he's been here since friday...did i mention that?) and i'm grateful that today is so beautiful because we got to spend some time outside. plus i need to go on a horrendously long run, which is why i'm wishing i could just zap some calories into my body because i don't particularly feel like eating.

food
fruit plate with two thin baguette slices and butter: 265c, 5p, 5f
5 crackers: 70c, 1p, 1f
1 oz cheddar: 110c, 7p, 0f
1.5c sesame chicken: 561c, 40.5p, 0f
1c fried rice: 333c, 12.5p, 1.5f
1c chocolate milk: 180c, 8p, 0f
1 meringue:  211c, 3p, 2.5f

totals: 1730c, 77p, 10f

exercise
so, i kept my heart rate right around 148 for the entirety of my long run...and cheated and did a little extra because i felt my pride was being wounded. i had to slow down, like, wayy down, to hit the right heart rate, which means that it took me FOREVER to run 8.1 miles. as in, 1:32:34. as in 5.3 mph. as in, slower than i've run in about 22 years. (exaggerating.)

anyway, i stuck to it, even though i ran 92 minutes instead of 80, and i ended up with a heart rate average of exactly 148, which i worked hard for. so, i guess that turned out well and was a victory even though it sort of feels like a failure. sigh.

8.1 miles, 92 minutes, 148 bpm: 972c

net: 758c. that's way too low, but i'm sick of eating, and really can't even think about consuming any more anything tonight. so, sorry, body. please don't go into starvation mode. <3 you.

 gratitude practice
the beautiful weather today
how easy it is to run when your heart rate is so slow
chocolate milk for its amazing calories and easy consumption (wish more foods did that)

day 32: everybody sees the wind blow

had rowing this morning out on the river. it was really wonderful, but super slow! i can't wait to actually row for two hours. can that start happening now? kthx.

food

strawberry pancakes: 280c, 3p, 0f
rhubarb compote: 25c, 0p, 0f
tbsp maple syrup: 52c, 0p, 0f
5 crackers: 70c, 1p, 1f
1 oz cheddar: 110c, 7p, 0f
1c sesame chicken: 374c, 27p, 0f
1c fried rice: 333c, 12.5p, 1.5f
1 crispin: 170c, 0p, 0f
1 boulevard: 155c, 0p, 0f
1/2 c chicken and rice:  354c, 19.5p, 0.5f

totals: 2063c, 84p, 3f
good thing i've had zero fiber today?

exercise
i kept my heart rate monitor on too long, so i'm just going to estimate, and i'll estimate kinda low. so, i worked out for a little over two hours, but a lot of that was sitting around and waiting..let's say 1 hour at 123 bpm:

day 31: things that are sore

...everything. my chest, my arms, my hip flexors, my abs, every joint that exists, my triceps...and we didn't even row!

it's been a really long day. since i went to bed soo late last night and couldn't stay awake to eat/couldn't stomach all the calories i was supposed to have, i'm feeling sort of sick and weak today. but that's normal, RIGHT?!

so my goal for the day is 2,400 net calories. that will even me out for yesterday and put me at 1,500 for today.

food
3 cups chocolate milk (throughout the day..yay fast calories):  510c, 24p, 0f
chicken and cashew wrap: 1,012c, 38p, 4f (...oops. i misread the label and that's about twice what i thought i was consuming.....)
turtle blizzard: 700c, 13p, 2f
1c greek salad: 200c, 4p, 0f
2 pieces punch pizza: 200c, 5p, 1f
1 piece rosemary flatbread: 30c, 1p, 1f
doubletree cookie: 314c, 4p, 0f

totals: 2222c, 75p, 6f....so turns out i'm gonna need to go running today. that's probably a good thing. still, ouch.
updated total: 2966c, 89p, 8f

exercise
40 minutes at a bpm under 167, 10 minutes at a bpm between 170 and 175. about 5.4 miles in 51 minutes, or a 6.4mph pace. not bad...i feel like my heart rate is already improving? is that possible?

net: 2238c (close to what i was aiming for..)

gratitude log
i'm going to get to take a nap soon.
my run today was easy. SO EASY. and i haven't run since sunday. i'm pretty proud of my body for that.

day 30: a flare of heat and light

as you've probably all guessed, this has been/continues to be a rough week. the good news is that i read an article this morning on the rumpus that was so heartbreakingly beautiful that it somehow made me feel connected and capable of getting past the next few days and weeks. thanks, perfectly crafted and folded words.

it probably also helped that i biked to work this morning, although a section of the greenway is closed, which meant it took me about twenty minutes to start on my way (it turns out that the "detour" leads you to a dead-end and you have to navigate through 18 parking lots to get to the next greenway entrance). but i didn't turn back.

egluck and i have rowing again tonight. hopefully no broken bones this time! it's our last practice before we go out on the water. i'm looking forward to the meditative state it puts me in. emily says she counts when she's sequencing her moves (legs, abs, arms, arms, abs, legs), and i made up a little song (music major?) to sequence mine. it focuses your mind just enough to get it away from all of the things that are going wrong, and allows you to just let it go.

sometimes i wonder what hell my life would be if i hadn't found endurance sports. seriously.

my roomie rachel had a fantastic idea for my blog: posting i'm something grateful for each day. i'm actually going to ramp it up and put things i'm grateful for at the end of each post, one for each time i edit them, log in etc. soo get ready for that.

----(later)
so, rowing went late, and then the CHAIN FELL OFF MY BIKE again (dammit), so EGluck graciously drove back to where i was (she'd just left) and took me home. argh! i didn't get home until almost 10 and i've been cleaning since. i still haven't eaten dinner and i was feeling too nauseated today to eat all of the food that i had at work (hence no yogurt), my back hurts and there's still more cleaning, plus i need to somehow pull this dinner together (it's on the stove, but is taking tooo lonnggg). i also think i'm going to have to do a grocery run and get some chocolate milk because i'm not going to meet my calorie needs for the day unless i eat until 3am. (i need like, 2100 more calories. aghh.)

but it's okay, because there are still things that i'm grateful for (see the list at the bottom).

for one thing, turns out rowing is wonderful. we haven't even been out on the water yet! since our class has a bootcamp component, we start each session with sprints, random stretches and other exercise challenges. on our first day, it was a 2k on the ergs (stationary rowing machine) and today it was burpees. if you don't know what they are, don't ever find out. those of us who knew when our coach said we were going to do them groaned. juuust groaned. but whatever. emily and i did beautifully.

then, we learned how to pick up the boat, carry it to the dock, put it in the water, get in, take it out, wipe it down and put it away. that sounds pretty simple but it's actually horrendously complicated because, after all, this is rowing. but we did well and the other girls in our class are hilarious and good-humored so it was actually fun.

i can't wait for saturday! we're going out on the river from the U, finally getting in the boat, not just carrying it. and poor emily is out of town for a wedding, so i'm going to have to row twice as much to make up for her absence. i'm not really worried about it... ;)

i have to admit, though, that i am a little bitter and angry at myself for not running today and not running enough lately. i think i need to really step up my game and make running my priority. if one thing in my day has to go, it should be biking, not running. i love both, but i'm training for a 10k. do i want to die in the middle of it? no. do i want to kick some serious runners butt? why, yes. yes i do.

food
1c blueberry/cranberry juice:  70c, 0p, 0f
huevos rancheros with a corn tortilla: 274c, 10p, 7f

sausage and fava bean pasta: 488c, 27.4p, 6f
two sticks string cheese: 160c, 16p, 0f
1c spicy v8: 50c, 2p, 2f
2 servings chicken and mushroom pasta:  900c, 45p, 4f (slightly different recipe)
2 meringues with strawberries and marscapone: 422, 6p, 5f
total: 2364c, 106.4p, 24f

exercise
an 80-minute bike ride to work, bpm 127: 645c
120 minutes of biking to rowing, bootcamp at rowing and a few other exercises, bpm 123: 1,055c

total: 1,700c

that's absurd!! for some reason i'm thinking that heart rate calories burned are more accurate than other calories. it takes more into account: your sex, your VO2 max as well as your weight, then takes the average bpm and calculates calories. maybe i was burning more earlier on than i thought i was and that's why my body went into semi-starvation mode? i'm certainly not gaining weight now...

net: 664. which means i'm going to have to eat an additional 900 calories tomorrow. sigh.

things that are awesome
going across the wabasha bridge downhill at 23+ mph on my bike
learning all the intense rowing lingo
making friends with other rowers and our coaches/coxswain (yep, that's a real thing)
strawberries. just strawberries
